aX By Carroll Gray A family feud-characterized by ambushes, surprises and wholesale slaughter! This is what the 1961 ACC football season has developed into. Pre-season "wise men" predicted teams like Duke, Mary land and Clemson to be the class of the conference with N. C. State close behind. These on-paper world beaters began falling from their gilded perches the first day of the season. Opening day saw some unheard-of Skyline Confer ence team (Wyoming, if you please) slap a cocky N. C. State 15 to 14. The same day Cousin Frank Howard and his herd of Future Farmers fell to a hot and cold Florida 21-17. Maryland started well and phrases like "undefeated season" were slung at random. U. N. C. upset that apple cart by upending the Terrapins last week 14 to 8. Before their initial defeat Maryland had very pleasantly clob bered Clemson 24-21 in Clemson's beloved Death Valley. It was death-for the Tigers. Duke hit the glory trail in a well earned 7-6 victory over USC in their season opener and were undefeated be fore the 21-0 humiliation at the hands of a surprisingly powerful Ga. Tech. Clemson started off bad-and got worse. Last week humble Wake Forest embarrased the Tigers once again in Death Valley 17 to 13 and presented Howard the worst season's start in his very long career. Seeking a rhyme or a pattern for all this nonsense, one has to base his opinion on the record. Clemson is 1 and 3; State is 1 and 3; Carolina is 1 and 3; Wake Forest is 1 and 3; Virginia is 2 and 2 (beat two Southern Conference teams) ; North Carolina is 2 and 1; Duke and Maryland are both 3 and 1 but their single defeats were bad ones especially on a national rating basis. Speaking of a national rating, the ACC "jist ain't got one." How many years has it been since the Atlantic Coast Conference has had no team in the top twenty? To my knowledge this week is the first time this has occurred since the birth of the conference in the early 50's. What does it mean? It means that our beloved conference is either becoming better balanced with stronger teams over-all or that it is weak. I venture to say that it is weak in comparison to past years and weak in comparison to other conferences. There are no unblemished records after only four games and the toughest end of the ACC schedule is yet to be played. In years past, the prevailing opinion concerning the strength of the Atlantic Coast Conference was high. The ACC ranked behind the Big 10 and the Southeastern-the third choice for post-season bowl appearances. This year the conference must be ranked behind the Southeastern, Big 10, South western, Pacific Coast, the Independents, Big 8 and little better than the Skyline. What's happened? Here's a little illustration that tends to shoot holes in football ratings so widely read and believed. South Carolina beat Wake Forest by 3. Wake Forest nipped Clemson by 4. Clemson smeared North Carolina by 27. By comparing scores, doesn't it stand to reason that Carolina is 34 points better than North Carolina?? Don't believe it, or if you do, come see me. My predictions to date are six right and 10 wrong-a percentage of .375. This extremely ill run of luck has caused excessive criticism and open ridicule of my crystal beer mug. To soothe the wave of unrest caused by such misinformation the sports staff has voted to break my mug!!! This dreadful act accomplished, an oracle possessing stronger powers has been found--a crystal shot glass. Its first red hot predictions are: Carolina over North Carolina by 8-Just wait and see! Clemson over Duke by 3-The Devils are down, way down. N. C. State over Wake Forest by 6-Gabriel starts to blow. Maryland over Air Force by 13-Rain, rain go away. L. S. U. over Kentucky by 15-The Bengals are rolling. Coaching OhYe!
