Students Choose 'Ugly Man' Alvin Mathis, sponsored b. Lambda Chi Alpha, defeated 11 candidates to win the title of "Ugly Man of Carolina" in a con. test held last week by Alpha Ph Omega, campus service fraternity Carolina students voted by puttiny any aiount of money from a penny on up in the jar of the canl didate of their choice. Each penny was counted as one vote. Conipution of the returns gavt Mathis 4,775 votes or $47.75, out of a total of 20,692 votes cast. Th< total vote for all 18 candidates amounted to $206.92 in cas which was presented to the Co Itunibia Orphopedic School. Jim Ashley, sponsored by Kappa Delta finished second, Terry Gray. Dr. Rado Presents Lectures Dr. Tbor Redo, research pro fessor at Ohio State University, will deliver a series of three lec tures May 19-20 at the University under the joint sponsorship of the University department of mathe marbics, Nationaa Science Floumnda tion and Mathematical A*odation of America. Dr. Redo, an internationally known nathematician, is one of the 1959-60 visiting lecturers of the Mathemabical Association of America. He is the author of four books and more than 100 research articles. Dr. Rado earned his doctorate at the University of Szeged in Hungary. The lecture topics are: "Mathematical Measurements," Thursday, May 19, 4:30 p.m., Room 211, Sloan College: "The Role and Nature of Proofs in Mathematics," Thursday, May 19, 8 p.m., Room 309, Sloan College which will be of an elemenetary nature and should be of interest to scientists in fields other than mathematics; and "Discovery in Mathematics by Analogy and Ab straction," Friday, May 20, 4:30 p.m., Room 211, Sloan College which will be sponsored by Pi Mu Epsilon, honorary mathematics fraternity. Debating the negative side of the national question, Sam Freed and Eddie Roberts won the tourna ment for Carolina.
