Coach Berry became the fourth coach and fifth person to leave the athletic depart ment in the last ten weeks. Coach D o d d announced that Berry would succeed Jim Carlen as coach of the Tech "B" team: Carlen will move up to the position as freshman coach, die position held by Berry at South Carolina. Berry is a native of Alabama but moved to Charlotte, N. C. as a teenager, starring as a footballer in the Charlotte high school circles. He enrolled at the University in 1948 and was the regular center during the 1952 season. After leaving South Carolina, Berry played with the Quantico marine base team in 1963. He re turned to his Alma Mater in 1955 after receiving his discharge to join the Gamecock football staff as a graduate assistant and was made a regular coach in 1956. The first USC coach to resign was Ernie Lawhorne, a defensive backfield coach. Lawhorne left to join a business firm in Columbia. The next to leave was No. 1 assistant Marvin Bass, who wvill fill that same position with Coach Dodd in Atlanta. Bass has been a regular since 1955. Leo Cahill was the third member to leave.
