Sigma, Preston Desires Title Tilt There may not be a playoff to determine t h e campus football championship, it was learned this week by the "Gamecock." Accord ing to the Director of Intramural Athletics, the decision to have the Fraternity champion meet the in dependent champ is left to the ,two teams. The "Gamecock" learned t h a t Preston, champs of the independent league, are in favor of -a playoff with the Fraternity League victor. Last year, there. was no playoff between the two titleholders to determine football supremacy on Campus. It was also pointed out to the "Gamecock" that the fraternity champ will receive a trophy in ad dition to points towards the cov eted award presented to the fra ternity team with the best athletic teams. The independent champions receive no trophy nor points. wherever you go. Al though none were named to start ing All-America posts, many re ceived acclaim locally and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. E'i Pitts, senior tackle and work horse of the staunch Carolina line which ranks fifth in the nation in rushing defense, was named on five post-season teams. The rangy lineman received honorable men tion on the NEA and Associated P r e a s All-America squads, and first place awards on the AP, Pal metto Grid Week, and Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association All-Conference teams. Pitts, Saunders Play Pitts, along with fullback John Saunders, will be fittingly hon ored with a berth on the South squad in the annual North-South game in Miami, December 26. Several juniors were also on the awards list. Guard Jake Bodkin, probably one of the most underated players in the conference, received an honorable mention from the AP All-America selection board, and made the second team on both the Palmetto Grid Week and AP conference elevens. Ends Named Ends Jack Pitt and Jerry Frye were named on two ballots. Pitt was an honorable mention AP All American and a second team choice on the AlP All-ACC card, while Frye received an honorable men tion from the latter and gathered first place votes on the Grid Week squad. Halfback Ken Norton was the remaining junior to be named, as he garnered a berth on the Gfrid Week first team. Phil Lavoie, the bruising full back who wound up second on the conference scoring totem pole and third in rushing, caught the ad miring eye of the Associated Press. The group named him to their con ference second team and the All America honorable mention list. T h e locally published Palmetto football pamphlet also named him as its second unit fullback. This was a revenge victory for the Gamecocks. Last year in the ACC playoffs, State scored three points in a matter of seconds to put the game in overtime; ther uutscored the Birds by three points. Overcoming a seven-point half time deficit, Coach Bob Stevens went into a full-court press and forced the Wolfpack into errors, Johnson was responsible for sev eral steals and hit five field goals out of six attempts in the frantic second half. Sigma Chi reached the finals by defeating Pi Kappa Alpha. Phi Kappa Sigma qualified by downing Sigma Nu. Tailback Richie Hoffman lit erally ran the Sigma Chi's into the finals with two touchdown jaunts against PI KA. His long est run covered 30 yards. In ad dition to scoring twice, Hoff man threw a pass to Don Rutledge which covered 70 yards for the third Sigma Chi tally. Dan Howard led Phi Kappa Sigma to an upset 24-19 victory over previously undefeated Sigma Nu to put the Phi Kaps in the finals. Sigma Nu scored first when tailback Frankie Lee ran 40 yards for a touchdown. Howard then put the Phi Kaps even with a TD pass to Rodger Groves. Jimmy Be leos returned the kickoff for an other Sigma Nu score. Howard found Sonny Satterfield with a touchdown pass and at halftime it was 13-12 Sigma Nu. Two quick touchdowns one on a run by Howard and the other on a pass from Howard to Sonny Hooker put Phi Kap out front 24-13. Lee ran 60 yards for the last Sigma Nu score and the game ended with the Phi Kaps in pos session of the ball. Phi Kappa Sigma reached the semi-finals with a 15-14 win over SAE. The margin of victory was provided on a safety w h e n Wayne Corley flagged an SAE back in the end zone. John Sat terfield and Dan Howard gal lopped 20 and 40 yards, respec tively, for touchdowns in the come-from-behind victory. Sigma Chi made the playoffs by virtue of a 20-0 whitewashing of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Before the game both teams were undefeated in league play and had previously tied 2t)-2(;. This time it was all Sigma Chi as Tony McCright and Don Itutledge intercepted S A E passes and ran them back for touchdowns. Riehie Hoffman hit McCright on a 50-yard pass play for the final touchdown and a score of 18-0. Golfers Requested To Meet Monday Menmbers of the golf team and those interested in playing golf on the team are requested to meet Monday night at 8 o'clock in Dr. Fourier's office in the Field House.
