There may not be a playoff to
determine t h e campus football

Last year, there. was no playoff

It was also pointed out to the
"Gamecock" that the fraternity

Honored
BY HOWARD HELLAMS
Sports Writer
Several Carolina players have
been honored recently for their
stellar performances this year. Al
though none were named to start
ing All-America posts, many re
ceived acclaim locally and in the
Atlantic Coast Conference.
E'i Pitts, senior tackle and work
horse of the staunch Carolina line
which ranks fifth in the nation in
rushing defense, was named on
five post-season teams. The rangy
lineman received honorable men
tion on the NEA and Associated
P r e a s All-America squads, and
first place awards on the AP, Pal
metto Grid Week, and Atlantic
Coast Sports Writers Association
All-Conference teams.
Pitts, Saunders Play
Pitts, along with fullback John
Saunders, will be fittingly hon
ored with a berth on the South
squad in the annual North-South
game in Miami, December 26.
Several juniors were also on the
awards list. Guard Jake Bodkin,
probably one of the most underated
players in the conference, received
an honorable mention from the
AP All-America selection board,
and made the second team on both
the Palmetto Grid Week and AP
conference elevens.
Ends Named
Ends Jack Pitt and Jerry Frye
were named on two ballots. Pitt
was an honorable mention AP All
American and a second team choice
on the AlP All-ACC card, while
Frye received an honorable men
tion from the latter and gathered
first place votes on the Grid Week
squad.
Halfback Ken Norton was the
remaining junior to be named, as
he garnered a berth on the Gfrid
Week first team.
Phil Lavoie, the bruising full
back who wound up second on the
conference scoring totem pole and
third in rushing, caught the ad
miring eye of the Associated Press.
The group named him to their con
ference second team and the All
America honorable mention list.
T h e locally published Palmetto
football pamphlet also named him
as its second unit fullback.

This was a revenge victory for
the Gamecocks. Last year in the

Overcoming a seven-point half

Sigma Chi and Phi Kappa Sigma
meet head on this afternoon to de
termine the 1959 fraternity foot
ball champions. Sigma Chi reached
the finals by defeating Pi Kappa
Alpha. Phi Kappa Sigma qualified
by downing Sigma Nu.
Tailback Richie Hoffman lit
erally ran the Sigma Chi's into
the finals with two touchdown
jaunts against PI KA. His long
est run covered 30 yards. In ad
dition to scoring twice, Hoff
man threw a pass to Don
Rutledge which covered 70 yards
for the third Sigma Chi tally.
Dan Howard led Phi Kappa
Sigma to an upset 24-19 victory
over previously undefeated Sigma
Nu to put the Phi Kaps in the
finals. Sigma Nu scored first when
tailback Frankie Lee ran 40 yards
for a touchdown. Howard then
put the Phi Kaps even with a TD
pass to Rodger Groves. Jimmy Be
leos returned the kickoff for an
other Sigma Nu score. Howard
found Sonny Satterfield with a
touchdown pass and at halftime it
was 13-12 Sigma Nu.
Two quick touchdowns one on a
run by Howard and the other on
a pass from Howard to Sonny
Hooker put Phi Kap out front
24-13. Lee ran 60 yards for the
last Sigma Nu score and the game
ended with the Phi Kaps in pos
session of the ball.
Phi Kappa Sigma reached the
semi-finals with a 15-14 win over
SAE. The margin of victory was
provided on a safety w h e n
Wayne Corley flagged an SAE
back in the end zone. John Sat
terfield and Dan Howard gal
lopped 20 and 40 yards, respec
tively, for touchdowns in the
come-from-behind victory.
Sigma Chi made the playoffs by
virtue of a 20-0 whitewashing of
Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Before the
game both teams were undefeated
in league play and had previously
tied 2t)-2(;. This time it was all
Sigma Chi as Tony McCright and
Don Itutledge intercepted S A E
passes and ran them back for
touchdowns. Riehie Hoffman hit
McCright on a 50-yard pass play
for the final touchdown and a
score of 18-0.
