arol, Heat May Determine Outcome BY BOBBY ALFORD Sports Editor The Gamecocks invade the fam ous Orange Bowl -Stadium tonight to battle the University of Miami Hurricanes in their Homecoming. The Birds, sporting two successive victories, will be facing one of their toughest opponents of the season. Miami, downgraded by sports writers after a dismal 2-8 season last year, has beaten four oppon ents this year while losing to such powerhouses as Louisiana State, Auburn and Kentucky. The Hurri canes have trounced North Caro lina, Navy, Florida State, and Tulane. The Hurricanes are a t r o n g both offensively and defensively. The Miami offense has made 107 first downs while holding their opposition to 80 in seven games. Led by guard Jack Novack and tackle Charles Linning, the Hur ricane defense has been strong est against the Gamecocks' forte, rushing. The Miamians have held the opposition to only 46 first downs rushing. "Miami has the best rushing defense of any team we have faced this season," .Gamecock mentor Warren Giese stated. Miami is as big a team as we have played against all season. They have a lot of explosiveness," Giese said. Fran Curci, pint-sized Miami quarterback, leads the Miami of fense. He runs as well as he throws. Giese, speaking at his weekly press conference, lauded the Hurricanes' field general, "Curci is the most outstanding single performer that we have faced this year. He is a good runner and has hit on almost fifty percent of his passes (62 out of 135). He is a brilliant all-round performer." In addition to Curci, the Hurri canes feature the running of backs Bob Rosbough, F r a n k Boufford, and Jim Vollenweider. Rosbough's rushing average is 5.1 yards per carry in 42 rushes. Vollenweider has averaged 4.1 in 46 attempts. End Bill Miller, Rosbough and Vollenweider are Curci's top tar gets for his passes. Miller and Ros bough have caught 16 passes each and Vollenweider has caught nine. Carolina came out of the Vir ginia encounter with only one seri ous injury. End Neel Patrick was injured and will not play again this season. Having o n I y one injury lowers the Birds per game injury average which has been two a game to this point. The first unit remained intact although end Jack Pitt was slightly injured. Th e grossly misnamed second unit is now imploying players who began the season on third, fourth and fifth teams. Injuries have necessi tated their being moved to the second unit. The Gamecocks' ground attack was productive against the Cava liers. F ullb ac k Phil Lavoie picked up 124 yards, halfback Joe Gomes rushed for 92, and quarterback S t e v e Satterfield ran for 82. Once again the Gamecock de fense allowed an opponent less than 100 yards rushing. The Cava liers managed only 98 yards on the ground; however, the sieve-like pass defense allowed Virginia yards. Coach Warren Giese again em phasized that because of injuries the Gamecocks must play error less football In order to win. The Birds made two errors against Virginia, but these did not figure in the scoring. The Gamecocks need this victory to regain national prestige.
