Fortson Leads To Victory 0 By WES SCO' ..Spot Columnist Tommy Fortson, a Columbia, South Carolina junior, and captain -of the University swimming team, led his squad to an impressive win over Clemson College, 58%-82%, in a meet held at Clemson, Janu ary 12. Point Leaders Fortson acquired a total of 17 points and swam on two winning relay teams. By far one of the finest swimmers ever to take to the Carolina pool, Fortson holds no athletic scholarship from the Uni versity and receives no added stip ends. He, like the rest of his team, swims because he enjoys doing so. Tom Butz, who took two first places for 17 'points, is a sopho more from Bethesda, Maryland and has as his specialty the free style. New Record Rob Higgins from up-country Greenville placed third in the scor ing column with 12 points. Biddies Dej Score Decih By WES SCOTT Sports Columnist Playing one of their best games of the season, the Carolina fresh man team rolled over the freshmen of Furman University, 101-79, in the pre-varsity bout, January 27. Coach Ken Rosemond's charges were up for the game following a disappointing loss to Wake Forest, 81-67, shortly before fall term exams began. Scoring Punch High scorer for the Biddies was Bobby Robinson, whose tally shows 22 points, all of them on field goals. Robinson, a Camden, South Carolina freshman, sunk his eleven buckets in the best game he has played this season. Play Maker Joe Laird, whose brilliant play ng at the University High School, ,olumbia, netted him a Carolina scholarship, and began him on a yage career here at the University, totaled 13 points. There is an in beresting feature of Laird's play ing that few fans realize. Joe, who has an injured back, plays each game heavily taped, and is able to by-pass the pain that is obvious with such an effort, and turn in a fine showing at guard. Laird also is a bright star in Carolina's fu ture basketball crown. Floor Man Also in the scoring column was Steve Brown, a guard from Greer, south Carolina, who put 13 points n the victory total. Looks To Next Year It was a scrapping Biddie team hat buried the Furman freshmen CANDY M AT LO( The PRESSBOX By CHARLIE BRADLEY Sports Editor Many students, as well as faculty members, have recently questioned the feasibility of continuing the intramural foot ball program. They point out that within the last three years there has been, as a result of all too great an importance placed on the winning of the football championship, several extremely serious accidents, one of these being nearly fatal to the per son involved. This is to say nothing of the numerous broken and fractured bones, torn muscles and ligaments, or the many cases of the loss of permanent teeth. Entirely left out are the superficial injuries which can normally be expected as a result of a highly competitive semi-contact sport. Many people close to the overall intramural program have said that they have "held their breath" each time a football game has been played, and unless something is done, they will do all in their power to have the sport banned. We the students might as well realize that the hand writing is on the wall. Something must be done. There have been several proposed measures. Some are in favor of prohibiting a team from playing unless it is equipped with protective equipment, such as helmets, fashioned after those a boxer uses in training. Still others are in favor of restricting the players to those members of the student body who are receiving no financial help whatsoever, regardless of the sport in which they com pete. As they put it, the boys on scholarship for any sport are naturally good enough in other sports to play and even be outstanding on the intramural level. The program itself is set up for participation by the students who do not derive the benefits obtained from participation in college athletics. I personally feel that a combination of the first two sug !estions plus the strengthening of the rules to such an extent that it would totally eliminate such infractions as clipping, the use of fists and elbows, leaving the feet to block or tag, and any other show of unsportsmanlike conduct. The change in rules would make such offenses punish able by removal for the duration of the game any person violating the rules after once being warned. Howards Folly At the recent Greenville Touchdown Club Jamboree Coach Frank Howard, when informed of the numerous citations won by Carolina players quipped, "If I'da had talent like that, like as not I'd always win. As it is. my boys survive only by superior coaching." And referring to Hawkins, he stated, "If a boy like that had a great coach like me, no telling how far he would've gone."
