Gamece Avenge Second Half Drive Gives Carolina Win By CHARLES BRADLEY Sports Editor Junior forward Mike Callahan summed things up for the Game cock basketeers after .the final game preceding semester exams after a disasterous beginning when he said, "We're half way through our schedule now,. and when we play Furman it is going to be like starting a new season." Up For the Game That's the way it was last Tues day night when Carolina came to grips with the Purple Hurricanes. Coach Lyles Alley's quint met head on with a determined and scrappy South Carolina squad. Carolina took the lead shortly after intermission and were never headed although a last ditch at tempt by Furman made the game close until the last several min. utes. Team Effort The game was definitely a team effort. To pick an outstanding player would require naming prac tically the whole squad. Callahan was a bear under the boards and demonstrated that he hasn't lost the touch that made him famous as a freshman. "Big Mike" hit on six of nine attempts from the floor, six free throws, for a total of 18 points and pulled off 23 rebounds. Dickie Prater came off the bench Beat Over The Years A few fans who have been watch ing University of South Carolina basketball through the years were speculating on an all-time Game cock quintet the other day. They agreed that a lineup of forwards Grady Wallace (1955-57) and Dwane Morrison (1950-52), center Jim Slaughter (1947-51), and guards Ray Pericola (1956-59) and Don Cox (1949-52) would be hard to beat. Our roots served by Ame SENERAL TEL EPHODM cks Def Previoi dter having seen limited action lue to ijuries, to provide leader ihip and a potent scoring punch, as ie chipped in with 14 points. As usual "Cookie" Pericola played a splendid floor game and also scored 14 markers. Several times during the waning moments f play he, with unbelievable maneuverability deliberately drew rouls on Furman players. This was especially true of highly touted Paladin ace Dick Wright who was left several times standing flat footed and missing certain pieces of his athletic apparel. He showed tonight that he was 'both a show man and a true sportsman. The Hudson twins, Walt and Bury, each contributed 11 points to the cause, but their true value lay in their defensive play,- speed, and ball-hawking. It was mainly through their efforts that Alley's uIsually high scoring team was held to what was for them a meager 68 points. Fred Lentz, although virtually Lnnoticed in spite of his 6'8" frame, came through in great fashion by gi-n.jbing key rebounds throughout the game, and more than once proving his value on defense by batting down Furman shots from around the foul lane. Fred Luigs, Junior Guard, was used quite frequently to spell various players throughout the night. Although not spectacular, Fred played a steady game, and virtually put the game on ice with his driving lay up with only one and one-half minutes remaining. Cokes With Comeback As the clock rang death into the "purple hearts," jubilant Game -ock players gave Coach Walt Hambrick a well-deserved ride to the dressing room, and as he went off, Ham was heard shouting, "Fifteen cokes and have them ready when we get in." Serve Notice Tuesday night's game certainly provides an insight into the Game cock possibilities, and most cer tainly, should they continue to show such scrap and know-how, the remaining games can produce many-a surprise for Atlantic Coast Conference foes. godepi the ria, scnd .njs i rodr17eepane in stte r,35,00 seceponds Ourglies ry1 vek.a And buil ading ig outwhoe Selehn s a iti of ong botsdi :omsmaltiesginng Gen Tel oyha limost $200 million this year In the ne he ever-increasing demand for more a ~merica's big promise Is in Gen Tel to ts part to meet it. eat Pall is Setba Dickie Pressure Player South Carolina g u a r d Ray (Cookie) Pericola is evidently at his best when playing against the toughest opposition. During his varsity career at South Carolina he has played 21 games against mem bers of North Carolina's powerful 'Big Four," Duke, North Carolina, N. C. State and Wake Forest. In Lhose games he scored 300 points for an average of 14.3 per game. Gamecock Star Mike Callahan, the University >f South Carolina's ever-improving 3-6 forward, played very little high school basketball. As a sophomore lie played at Lincoln high in Jersey City, but his family moved to Sus iex, where he was ineligible one year because of the transfer rule ind the following, because of the 18-year-old age limit. ~owmg weas der>phone syistem grass roots grow. iew homes are springing up ire the areas where General grown with the countryside. s provide modern service for 9 million conversations each a every day. o keep up with the growing :'s why Gen Tel is investing w facilities required to meet nd better telephone service. P Baseball Practice Scheduled Coach Joe Grugan has issued a call for all -Yitchers and catchers interested, in trying out for the varsity squad. Workouts are being held each day at 3:00 on Davis Field. Par ticipants are to provide their own gloves, shoes and practice clothing, until such time as the number try ing out can be determined. At that time practice uniforms will be issued. Drills for the first week will be corfined mostly to conditioning, with the heavy work and funda mentals commencing on Feb, 2, when students competing for in field and outfield berths report for practice. In a talk with Grugan earlier in the week, he stressed the impor tance to the team of active student participation. The majority of the positions on the squad will be filled by students and not by men on scholarship, although men mak ing the varsity will be granted aid to some extent, the least being the providing of the evening meal by the athletic department. Coach Grugan also stated that all positions are open to the, best men available. The squad has been hurt severely by the loss of key players through graduation and eligibility prob lems. In recent years Carolina has never quite reached expected heights, but they have consistently provided top-flight competition against all opponents. With a little luck and some help from the stu dent body, this year should be no exception. JECTICUl inooring Facilities for Devel. Eniring: Drtmn,P Basketball Dismay Tev By BILL DUNNE Sports Columnist The basketball game Tuesday night between the Gamecocks and the Furman University "Purple Paladins" was the scene of the most atrocious officiating witnessed by this writer in many a season of attending games in the Carolinas. During the first few minutes of the game, neither the crowd nor the players could believe the amount of fouling that was going on and not being called although, it took the crowd awhile the players caught on fast. It wasn't long before the troops were riding up to the basket on the back of the man on defense. Completely Impartial To the credit of the referees, who I shall refrain from naming as It could lead to their assisina tion, they were completely im partial-they let one team foul just as much as the other-this way the black and blue marks were evenly distributed on both sides. Many Faults Although the fouling was the most outstanding fault of the referees they didn't let them selves make up for it in othe' areas. Twice, once a Gamecock and once a Paladin, they called walking, when the player with the ball was standing perfectly still holding the ball in his hands -impartiality to the end. The business depression may be over but the signal calling depression is just arriving on the scene. Not Again Let's hope that through the Grace of God or good ole Lady Luck that the officiating in the future will be of higher calibre than that witnessed at the game on Tuesday night.
