Approximately 75 new scholar ships will be added to those of fered for 1969-60 under the Inter American Cultural Convention program. CR-11 orporation of America 2, New Jersey .1 AMERICA MUSIC NOTES .Revolving Music Age Dilemmas By Dave Bledoe Music Analyst Though it may be somewhat gilding the Lily to say much about Big Thursday's victory, no small credit is due our much maligned marching band. Of course, nothing could go wrong with Carolina that day-and fin ally, at long last we didn't have to apologize for our portion of the half-time festivities. Of course, this didn't happen accidentally, as any band member will tell you, many hours were spent in long practice sessions. The music was good, the marching far above average, and the band looked and played like a unit. The only trouble is, now that one excellent performance has been turned in, more will be expected. Oh well, as the old ' saying goes: "One good thing leads to another," or something like that. New From Old Number one top record around the Nation these days is "It's All in the Game." This is one of the better records out, but for those of you who think it's a new tune, try listening to Nat Cole's version, released a while back. There's nothing new about re hashing old tunes . . . there's a story making the rounds about a lady who wanted to know some thing more about that new song, "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows." While there's nothing new about making popular songs from clas sics, not too many people realize that the same idea works in re verse . . . particularly with folk songs. Anton Dvorak's 5th String Qua'rtet suddenly breaks out or should I say strings along? with a very recognizable "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Perhaps we don't realize that a lot of our music now considered classic and certainly original, were once folk songs, or at least themes from folk songs, once upon a time. Maybe 50 years from now Car negie Hall will ring to "Chantilly Lace"-but I doubt it. Hoopers The latest fad is to do the hula hoop to music. So far this hasn't gotten out of hand, but let's hope nobody tries it to Ravel's "Bolero," or we'll have some pooped hoopers on our hands. Stereo The record companies are be ginning to hitch their collective wagons to stereo, and for those of you lucky enough to be able to listen to sound from two ways, .some of the top twin tracks will be reviewed. Anne Frank was given a diary for her 13th birthday in 1942. This diary which she called Kitty for secrecy's sake is a record of her tribulations during the Ger man occupation of Holland. Hideout She, her parents and sist.r had to abandon their home to live undercover in a warehouse in Am sterdam. They were later joined there by a dentist and another family of three. Here in the rear section of this building they remained hidden from their imprisoned Holland. Anne asked the questions: "Who has inflicted this upon us? Who has made us Jews different from all other people? Who has allowed us to suffer so terribly up to now? It is God who has made us as we are, but it will be God, too, who will raise us up again." Teen Years Even though Anne had a spark of genius as evidenced by her self-education and the manner in which she wrote she had the normal desires of a teenager. She fell in love with Peter van Daan, the other family's son. This helped her to escape the bickering and disorder of the group and to strain for self control. In August 1944 the *Gestapo raided the annex and all were sent to a concentration camp In Bergen-Belsen where Anne Frank and all others except her father died three months before Hol land's liberation. Off The Cuff By George Leventis Special Writer Now that the cooler weather has set in, we will begin to have a few formals here and elsewhere. The fair ladies will don their finest gowns in all their splendor and color, and the bo. s will don their somber black or midnight blue costume and go in meek ex-splendor as the un-attrac tive escort. These are some of our gayest and most exciting events, yet the men dress as if they were joining a funeral proces sion. Where the black stiffness of formal attire originated I do not know, but the envious male has at long last revolted at being the lesser attractive and is beginning to add color and variety. It all began with the colored cummerbund and now different styles of dinner jackets (or tuxedo)-jackets with the customary shawl lapels but with black piping and black cuffs. The different colors are grey, brown and red-or maroon, and some are arranged in beautiful brocade. Some are so loud they hurt, but the others with the braid and piping have attractive color and are beautiful. You'll not find any of these in stock in the stores of Columbia, but if you ask at your favorite store, I'm sure they will be glad to order for you. Wingtips Socks and shoes, if you believe it or not, are a very important part of the male dress, and there are certain shoes and socks to be worn with each type of dress. Noth ing is more improper or unattractive than wearing loafers and white socks with a suit-or I might add, dirty bucks. The more attractive shoe to wear with a suit is the wing tip matching in color; however, if there isn't a wingtip in your wardrobe, the plain toe may be substituted. Matchmates Of course it goes without saying that black goes with blues, and grays and brown with the other colors. There are a few colors, however, that either brown or black shoes may be worn with, depending on the shirt and tie. For example, this year brown is being worn with gray and if so, naturally brown shoes are to be worn; the same goes for your greens I could go on and on about which color shoe should be worn with each outfit, but if you want to be safe just try to match your suit. The right sock to wear is very simple; you try to match as nearly as you can the color of your tie, but if you don't like this idea, try to match your suit. If you really want to be safe in the choice of socks you might do this: buy three colors of socks; dark brown for all browns, tans and greens; dark gray for all grays; and dark blue for all blues, blacks and some grays. Fraternity Fad The other day I saw a fraternity man wearing a blue blazer with his fraternity coat of arms on the pocket. It was very attractive and I think it would be a good idea if all the fraternities adopted a coat with the coat of arms on he pocket. This coat could be worn when the fraternities have functions that the public or non-fraternity members are to attend, for example, when a fraternity is to serenade at a songfest or when asked to usher at University affairs, rush parties and many other events. Sportscoats I was down at Britton's the other day talking to Arnold, the manager-owner and he told me of some wonderful buys on shetland sportcoats. After looking them over I'd say they are very nice. Some even have the hacking pockets and the cut-away front. He has all sizes and just about any color combination you could wish for. The prices are from $45, which is a good buy on a shetland. Why not go down and look them over? Campus Showing The showing in Russell House by the Oxford Shop of Augusta was a successful display on what the Oxford man wears. The owners of Oxford Shop asked me to ex press their sincere thanks for the hospitality shown to them during their short visit on our campus.
