The Cadets, on the strength of their 14-2 victory Saturday, were voted into the No. 1 spot today by the sports writers and sports casters participating in the poll. Auburn, still unbeaten, slipped to second place. Three teams dropped out of the top 10 entirely. Notre Dame, fourth a week ago, dropped to 12th. Oklahoma, a good second last week, dropped to 11th as a result of its one-point defeat by Texas. Pittsburgh, No. 10 a week ago, fell out of sight through being trounced by Michigan State. Don [was stationed at Fort Jackson, S. C. during his six month tour of duty in the U. S. Army. It was while he was at the Fort that he met Coach Warren Glese and became interested in coaching here at USC. Coach Giese has called the pres ent freshman team, "the finest group of freshmen," since he has been at the University. Before entering Central Missouri tate College, where he obtained a B.S. in Education and lettered on the football team at tackle, Don attended high school at Cen tral High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where he played football, basketball and baseball. While he is here at the University Don hopes to work toward and obtain his Master's degree. Coach Willsey married a home town girl in Kansas City, Barbara Sue Edwards on the 81st of July, 1955. Don and Barbara Sue are the proud parents of a daughter, Kelly Ann, born on July 30th of this year. The Gamecock would like to go on record as wishing Coach Donald W. Willsey nothing but the best of luck while he is here at the University and wherever else he may go in pursuit of his career. Coach Ratliff Issues A Call For Swimmers Swimming &mach Jimmy Ratliff has issued a call tc all persons in terested in trying out for the JJni versity's Freshman or Varsitiy swimming teams. Coach Ratliff asks that those interested to be present at a short mneeting, immediately preceeding the initial practice. The meeting will be held at the University swimming pool, Monday, October 20, at 4 p.m. Coach Ratliff has lined up an attractive schedule for his Merman i,his year. The schedule includes engagements with such perennial national powers as North Carolina State and UNC, as well as all other ACC teams. Contests have also been arranged with Davidson College and The Citadel Bulldogs. Twin highlights of the season will be the South Carolina State meet, which will be held here in Columbia this year, and the At lantic Coast Conference meet held each year in Chapel Hill, N. C.
