Second Straight Ye SAE Win By Sid Badger Sports Editor Carmichael's "Whiz Kids," better known as SAE fraternity, marched to their second consecutive campus football championship last Tues day as they edged a strong Preston aggregation in a defensive strug gle, 6-0. The winners had pre viously defeated Sigma Nu to en ter the finals while Preston won out over the Crawford All-Stars. Royall Outstanding SAE and Preston locked horns n a titanic display of defensive prowess in the first half as both teams moved well at times only to have their drives stopped cold on crucial plays. Bob Royall was by I far the dutstanding defensive back on the field during the first half as he repeatedly stopped potential drives by the losers with his pass interceptions. On one occasion, All-Stars Selected; Play Feb. 6 The Intramural department's first all-star football game will be held this year with star studded teams from the fratern ity league matching wits with a similar team of Independents on February 6. MIsaurI ar Football when Preston seemed to have a scoring drive started, Royall leaped high on his own two-yard stripe to gather in a "Hunk" Miller pass and returned it to his own 27 he fore being stopped. He also inter epted another crucial pass in the fading minutes of the first half, this time in his own end zone run ning it out to his I8 before being halted. The only score of the game came with only three and a half minutes left in the first half when Charlie Jacocks found "Buzzy" Carmichael open, hurled a long pass from his )wn 19, connecting for a (I-yard scoring play. The try for extra point was no good- and SA K led 6-0 as the first half ended. Miller's Passing Sharp The second half was merely a matter of who could stand the brutai line play of both teams and the very annoying dust that has hampered intramural play a II season. Jack Martin and "Tubby" Jones were outstanding on both of fense and defense for the losers with "I[unk'" Miller's passing and running featuring a good offein at times. Some of Miller's passes were dropped at critical times that may have proved fatal in the long run. SAE Tops Fraternities SA' E hatd previously beaten Sigma Nu for the fraternity title, the score being i to 2. The losers started off as if they would upset the applecart when a hard charg ing Sigma Nu line, led by Legrand Guerry, who charged in on Charlie JIacocks for a safety. 'l'his two points held good until late in the second period when SA E got a drive started and behind the finte passing of Jacocks and receivin: of C4rm1ichael and Ford. scored1 andl led at the half' 6-2. Title lar drive started after Carmichael intercepted a Whaley pass .t mid field and in only five plays the winners had scored, the last play being a Jacock-to-CarmichaVl pass covering 12 yards. Revenge Sweet Preston gained .a finals berth with SA E when they clobbered a game and much smaller Crawford All-Star team 19 to 0. The first half ended in a score less tie and even late in the Ihird period it seemed as if Crawford might spring an upset. Preston would drive for yardage as well as Crawford but both teams would halt each drive with spectacular inttercepiLons. In all there werc f ive pass interceptions in the third quater, three by the losers and two by Preston.
