Freshman Play Tech In Atlanta The Carolina freshman team closes out its season tonight against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. A victory would give them an undefeated season with only one tie to mar the record. That was a 14-14 deadlock with Clemson. They have taken victories over Wake Fordat, 25-7, North Caro lina, 13-0, and N. C. State, 21-19. . South Carolina fans take en couragement from that because the last outstanding freshman team here, the 1950 outfit, later formed the nucleus for the Game cocks' fine 1958 varsity team. Halfb.ck King Dixon has been the offensive star for the Biddies so far this season. Carolina has several other talented backs who will bear watching, too, including quarterback W. L. Strickland of Thomaston, Ga., fullback Charles Jackson of Cheraw, and halfbacks Alex Hawkins of South Charles ton, West Virginia, and John Dorsett of Birmingham, Ala. Line standouts thus far have included tackle John Kompara of Canton, 0., guard Jimmy Merck of Liberty, center Lawton Rogers of Conway and end Buddy May field of Atlanta, Ga. The starting lineup for the Bid dies will probably be ends May field and Jimmy Duncan, tackles Kompara and D. Rogers, guards Winkle Kirk and Jimmie Merck, center Lawton Rogers, quarter back Strickland, halfbacks Haw kins and Dixon, and fullback Charles Jackson. NOTICE There has been a change in the schedule for recreational swimming. The new schedule is: Monday 7-9 Thursday 7-9 Friday 4-6. Swimmers Are Working Out; Small Team The swimming team has been holding workouts every day for over a month. The team is undermanned this year as usual. There are 15 men out for the varsity, nine of them lettermen. There are 10 events in each meet. Except for the two relay races, there should be two or three men in each event. This totals between 20 and 30 good swimmers of which the Gamecock tankmen are lacking by about half. The returning lettermen are Len Baranski, freestyle; Walter Johnson, freestyle and back stroke; Jim Turner, freestyle; Otis Etheredge, breaststroke; Rob ert Ragin, breaststroke; Bob Campbell, breaststroke; Wilson Hardee, backstroke; Hal Lefferts, freestyle; Winter Kimes, diver. New men -eligible for the var sity are Jimmy Myers, diver; Bill Wilkins, diver; Tommy Johnson, freestyle; Bernard England, free style; Tom Howell, freestyle; Bob Kelsey, freestyle. No meets have been scheduled for freshmen yet because of a lack of swimmers. There are only Ofive out. If there is enough men Oto make a team when the season begins, meets can be scheduled with Clemson and other schools, said swimming coach Jimmy Rat 1iff. Freshmen out for the team now are Dave Rembert, freestyle; Carlton Poulnot, backstroke; David Stamford, freestyle and diver; Arthur Gaston, freestyle; James Randall, freestyle. The varsity schedule is not com plete yet. The present schedule is: N. C. State, here, Dec. 3. - North Carolina, here, Dec. 10. Citadel, here, Jan. 7. Davidson, there, Feb. 17. Duke, there, Feb. 18. Meets have been scheduled with Wofford in Spartanburg and with Clemson here, but the dates have not been arranged yet. The state meet also has to be arranged, The conference meet will be held the first week in March. Work Be Work has started on the new athletic plan on Rosewood Drive. It is scheduled for completion by June 1, and will cost approxi mately $850,000, said William H. Patterson, dean of administra tion. The building itself will cost $260,000. The outside facilities will cost an additional $90,000. The building- will be circular in shape with the center being used as a storage room, and will be two stories high. It will include offices for all the coaches, a lec ture room, dormitory rooms for the visiting teams, dressing rooms and showers, and other needed facilities. The athletic department has only two offices for the whole staff at present. There will be more offices in the new plant but maybe a couple of the coaches will have to double up. The outside construction in cludes a baseball diamond, a track, and- three practice football fields. Two tennis courts are included in the plans but they will not be added until later.
