January weather is hard on any girl's complexion and for the sake of looks girls resort to make-up bases. Unless you are a victim of frequent blemishes or acne (which should be dealt with by a dermatologist) a 'well-chosen facial foundation is a three-way blessingi it covers tiny imperfections of the skin, corrects a less-than-perfect color, helps protect the skin against soot andi weather. These make-up bases come in various consistencies: cake make up-applied with water and a sponge for a dramatically make-up look; stick-cream make-up which is easy to apply with the fingers; and the most popular-tinted liquid make-up. In using a foundation, ther'e are certain secrets of success-both from an appearance and a skin care angle. Appearance-wise, be sure that the base is blended at the edges, and smoothed on the chin. Nothing is less attractive than a makeup which glares with a muddy glow. Moderation should always be used to get the right effect. For the sake of looks and skin, never pile layer upon layer of foundation on your face. Always wash your face thoroughly and rinse with cold water before appying make-up. Perhaps the first one which will swing into any kind of action will be golf as ' the Gamecocks plan to put out one of the best golf teams in the conference. Captain Boibby Boswell will 'be returning from last year's squad along with Ralph Irick and Jim Picquet while such rising sophomores as Bobby Gunnels and Billy Higgins, names well known in South Carolina golf circles, and Joe DeLuca, a Dela ware amateur par excellence, will surely add mich strength to the best team in the school's history. Freshman Bobby McCarty, from Camden, who won the North Caro lina - South Carolina Amateur crown over the past summer, will work out and make the trips with the varsity squad. McCarty is the first man in the school's history to receive a full scholarship for golf. Perhaps the best spring sport last year was track and this year looms as last season's equal or better. Such greats as Tommy Woodlee, Sonny Welchor, Leon Cunningham, Freddie Roberts, Bobby Drawdy, Don Whetstone, and Joe Silas will add their talents to some rising sophomore poten tial, which added together, should provide a great track squad. Preston hit 15 of 24 shots from the floor, mos'tly one handers from just outside the foul circle, to add to his four free throws to account for the 34 markers. Smith became the third Game cock to score over 1,000 points in a lifetime as his 27 points pushed his total for a four-year career to 1,023. The other two Birds who have already gained adinittance to the charmed circle were Henry Martin who finished in 1949 and Jim Slaughter who finished in 1951. Center Lee Collins picked 21 of the 70 rebounds off the back boards to account for another school mark. Ed Blanko was high scorer for the home team with 15 points and 19 rebounds.
