his team is far more important
than merely scoring as he ranks
among the top rebounders in the
conference. Forward Joe Smith
has contributed the second best
effort to the Gamecock cause with
108 points in seven games for a
15.4 average.
The Cavaliers from up Virginia

with an 88.1 average. Carolina is
seventh with a 70.0 average for

On defense the Maryland quin

nation's 11th ranked club has held
their nine opponents to 58.7 points

Unless you have a flawless com
plexion (with perfect texture and
a color the Old Masters would
have envied) you probably worry
about your skin. January weather
is hard on any girl's complexion
and for the sake of looks girls
resort to make-up bases. Unless
you are a victim of frequent
blemishes or acne (which should
be dealt with by a dermatologist)
a 'well-chosen facial foundation
is a three-way blessingi it covers
tiny imperfections of the skin,
corrects a less-than-perfect color,
helps protect the skin against soot
andi weather.
These make-up bases come in
various consistencies: cake make
up-applied with water and a
sponge for a dramatically make-up
look; stick-cream make-up which
is easy to apply with the fingers;
and the most popular-tinted
liquid make-up.
In using a foundation, ther'e are
certain secrets of success-both
from an appearance and a skin
care angle. Appearance-wise, be
sure that the base is blended at
the edges, and smoothed on the
chin. Nothing is less attractive
than a makeup which glares with
a muddy glow. Moderation should
always be used to get the right
effect. For the sake of looks and
skin, never pile layer upon layer
of foundation on your face.
Always wash your face thoroughly
and rinse with cold water before
appying make-up. Nature's found

The Birds left Columbia lasi
Thursday afternoon and opened
their season against the mighty
Tar Heels in Chapel Hill with
UNC setting seven ACC records
as they downed the Rooster

a perfect record intact for the
Tar Heels who have won three
straight in this year's action.
Charlie Krepp, a sophomore
from Baltimore, Maryland, had
a hand in three of the new ree
ords. He personally broke the
Bownman-Gray pool and ACC 200
yard backstroke mark. His firsi
leg on the medley relay broke
the conference 100-yard back
stroke mark with this effort aid
ing in the setting of a new 300
yard medley record which Krepp
set along with I)ick Baker and
Phil Drake.
The next morning the Birds
journeyed to Raleigh where they
met the Wolfpack from NC State
who made their season's record
2-0 as Gamecocks felt the weight
of superior swimmers, 61-22. One
NCAA and four ACC records were
set in this meet.
Bob Mattson of Worcester,
Mass., set a new NCAA 200-yard
breaststroke record with a time
of 2:28.9, bettering the old record
of 2:29.8 set by Horne of North
western in 1934. This time also
bettered the ACC record which
Mattson set last year.
In addition, Mattson set a con
reneice record in the 150-yard in
lividual medley by swimming the
course in 1:32.3 which bettered
his own previous conference mark
)f 1:34.8 which he swam in 1954.
Bill Sonner of Providence, R. I.,
set ACC records in the 50-yard
rreestyle and 100-yard freestyle.
His time of :23.8 in the' 50-yard
rreestyle bettered -the :23.9 set by
Don Sonie of State in 1954. In
the 100-yard freestyle, his time
was :53.5 surpassing the :53.8
set in 1954 by Coggins of Virginia.

The Maryland Terrapins brought
their possession type basketball
and their spot as the nation's
11th best basketball quintet to
Columbia last Monday night and
beat the winless, in ACC competi
tion, Gamecocks, 68-52 in the
Carolina Field House before a
very small crowd.
The Birds proved quite the
match for the Terps in the first
half as the weaker Roosters left
the court at halftime with a
meager two-point deficit as the
Terps led 26-24. litt as the second
half opened Coach Bud Milliken's
boys opened up with some deadly
shooting and were never threat
ened for the remainder of the
game.
Sophomore Bob O'Brien was the
big reason for the early second
half lead as he (uimpedl four field
goals while the Terps sank eight
of 11 and shot six-for-six from
the charity line in the first nine
minutes of the secon( -half.
Coach Milliken instructed the
Maryland hoys to keep Carolina
center Lee Collins busy so that he
would not be able to sink his one
hander and thus the Bird offensive

Tops In Spring
The end of the semester is just
around the corner and as the
second semester approaches the
talk is beginnIng to fill the air
concerning spring sports, base
ball, track, golf, and tennis.
Perhaps the first one which will
swing into any kind of action will
be golf as ' the Gamecocks plan
to put out one of the best golf
teams in the conference. Captain
Boibby Boswell will 'be returning
from last year's squad along with
Ralph Irick and Jim Picquet while
such rising sophomores as Bobby
Gunnels and Billy Higgins, names
well known in South Carolina golf
circles, and Joe DeLuca, a Dela
ware amateur par excellence, will
surely add mich strength to the
best team in the school's history.
Freshman Bobby McCarty, from
Camden, who won the North Caro
lina - South Carolina Amateur
crown over the past summer, will
work out and make the trips with
the varsity squad. McCarty is the
first man in the school's history
to receive a full scholarship for
golf.
Perhaps the best spring sport
last year was track and this year
looms as last season's equal or
better. Such greats as Tommy
Woodlee, Sonny Welchor, Leon
Cunningham, Freddie Roberts,
Bobby Drawdy, Don Whetstone,
and Joe Silas will add their talents
to some rising sophomore poten
tial, which added together, should
provide a great track squad.
Tennis and baseball loom as this
3pring's weakest sports but neither
the baseball team nor the tennis
squad will be regarded lightly by
teams around the league.

mark was also the first time
the Birds have bettered the
the past. He got into the fracus
in the second half and scored nine
quick points while clearing the
boards of nine rebounds in a very
short time. This 6'4%" junior
from Aiken, South Carolina, gave
Coach Frank Johnson something
to sit up and take notice of.
This gave Smith an average of
12.7 points a game for 80 games
in three and a half years. His 27
points against Newberry was his
best single game effort with his
previous best being 26 which he
tallied against Wake Forest last
year.
Smith is now third among Caro
lina's high scorers. Martin closed
out with 1,050, and Smith should
overtake him before the end of
this, his last season. But he'll
have a hard time catching the
all-time high of 1,512 which
Slaughter claims for a college
career's effort.
