V2 leyball Ptay Opens The intramural athletic season v got under way this past week with the playing of volleyball. The teams are in leagues the same as last year, with .two Fraternity Leagues and two Independent Leagues. In games played to date Phi Sigma Kappa beat Kappa Alpha 15-2; 15-8. Pi Kappa Phi beat SAE 15-1; 15-8. A,TO forfeited to Phi Sigma Kappa. All this action took place in Fraternity League Number 1. In Fraternity League 2: Sigma Nu beat Kappa Sigma 15-5; 15-9. SPDE beat Pi Kappa Alpha 15-4; 15-13. Phi Epsilon Pi beat Sigma Phi Epsilon 15-7; 6-15; 15-11. Sigma Nu and Phi Kappa Sigma Played in the Naval Armory and didl not report the score. Action in the Independent Leagues was scheduled to get under way Monday with no report from the games played to date. C4 The University of South Caro lina Freshman football team ran out of gas In the second half and the UNC Baby Tar Heels took advantage of it to beat the Biddies 25-12. Buddy Sasser, a native South Carolinian, passed and ran bril liantly to lead the Tar Heels to victory. North Carolina displayed a fine line against the Baby Birds. The game was even-Stephen at 12-12 at the end of the first half. Nelson Weston, guard, was in Jured three plays after the half and had to leave the game. He left a hole in the Carolina de fense, and Sasser took advantage of the hole. Top Flight Passer The Birdies displayed a brilliant passing attack led by quarterback Sam Vickers. Vickers completed eight out of 11 tosses for two touchdowns. One touchdown pass was a 38-yarder to end Buddy Nidiffer, and the other to halfback Heyward King good for 18 yards. The lack of bench strength was the downfall of the Biddies. This is plain to see In the fact that at halftime the score was tied, but the second half was a different story. "We played a fine ball game," commented freshmen Coach Weems Baskin. Coach Baskin pointed out also the fine line play of North Carolina along with the running of Quarterback Sasser. Sammy Vickers ran the team well from the split-T. Joe Gomes led the offense with 26 yards in five tries for a 5.2 average. On defense Guard Nelson Weston, Tackle Al Plaskey and Linebacker Bobby Barrett looked good. Exceptional Talent The Biddies have some pretty formidable talent on the club. Bobby Barrett, fullback, was All America while playing prep foot ball in Barboursville, W. Va. last fall. He was voted most out standing player in West Virginia East-West all-star game. Joe Gones was all-city choice in Newark, N. J. last fall. Bobby Bunch was all-state Class B while playing for Sum merville High in '53. C. )ok Good Opener Charlie Johnson was an out standing fullback for Welcome High,but is shifting to center. The Biddies definitely have some good material which will help the big Birds come next fall and next football season. The first home game will be against arch-rival Clemson next Wednesday night at Carolina Stadium. This will kick off the big Staw Fair holiday for Caro lina students. The Biddies will be looking for their first win 'of the early season, and they would like nothing better than to get that win from the little Tigers. The remaining games after the Clemson affair will be against North Carolina State in Columbia Oct. 29; Georgia Military Nov. 6; and Wake Forest Nov. 19. Last year the Biddies won three and lost two. The University of South Caro lina hopes to have one of the best athletic plants in the South within a few years. A new track and practice fields will be laid out on tlXe 21 acres of land re cently purchased near the present campus. The new lighting system at Carolina Stadium, capacity 34,000, leaves little to be asked there.
