I by JOIINNY RA Y CAROLINA TRACK TEAM TAKES A GIANT STEP; WAS UNCERTAIN FOUR VICTORIES AGO If you're looking to a winning team this spring-say a track team-you won't have to look far. Likely, you'd have to go at least to Capital City Park to find a winning baseball team, and maybe you wouldn't find it there, either, but it's a certainty that the Gamecock track team can be called "twinning." So far this season the cindermen have taken four victories and have absorbed only one defeat. The latest victory, at Presbyterian Wednesday afternoon, is the big sign of success. State champions last year, the Blue Hose went down 73-58 under the powerful Gamecocks. Perhaps you remember that the boys from Carolina could make only 39 points in the state meet, and came in third behind Clemson. GOOD REASONS FOR SUCCESS There's no secret weapon newly acquired by Coach Weems Baskin, and there's no dark secret surrounding the pleasing success of the team. Five big reasons for success are fresh men. Three of them from Macon, Ga., Sonny Wilcher, Freddie Ioberts, and Joe Defore are the Georgians; Allen Inabinet hails from St. Matthews, and Gene Bezzy is a local lad. Wilcher, 440 and 220 man, was Georgia state champ last year; Itoberts was the half-mile champ, and Defore the shot put winner. Wilcher is seemingly unbeatable in the 440 and 220. le turned in the nation's tenth best time in the 440-yard run agailnst Gcorgia, comiig in at 19.3. Against Presbyterian, he made 22.4 in tle 220. Some have already begun comparing him with Scooter lRucks, Carolina's 1948 400-meter champ. Rucks holds the Southern conference quarter-mile record of 47.4 and a 220-yard (dash record of 21.6. We wvon't attempt to compare the t wo, as it would seem that any creditable corn parison wouldl be somewhat premature, but since Wilcher is only a freshman, he will doubtlessly have ample time to shoot for' any recordls lying around untouched. 1'PPERt-(LASSMEN NOT EXCLUDJIED; D)RAWD)Y, McBRIDE Bobby D)rawdy, 100-yard dash man and Garn McBride, last year's winner in the mile and two-mile events, are two of the main springs figuring greatly in the victories. D)rawdy, who also throws the javelin and runs the 220, is the team's leading scorer with 45 points to his credit. PRESBYTERIAN The Gamecocks did the unexpected Wednesday as they madeo a clean swveepl of the shot put contest, D)efore taking first, .Joe Silas secondI, and Charlie ('amp third. The discus throw, which has been a weak point f'or Carolina, also was won by Silas. Gene Berry, a stylist with the javelin, also took first place. HERE AN!) THERE Shortstop Tom Hlofferth leads the baseball te'am in total hits with 15. At bat 45 times, he is currentiy hitting .333... Hlofferth andl Infielder Jimmy Cox each have six RI1's to lead in that dlepartment . . . Cox's two home runs p)uts him ahead in c'ircuit clouts. H offerth also has a four-bagger along with Otis Rawi and ~Jimmy Fraser . . . Buddy Berry, the team's leading hitter with .343, is tops with three triples and RawI has the same number of two-base-hits . . . To (date, the entire team has stolen only 11 bases . . . Gene, Molnar's eight strike-outs gives him low honors in that department, dlesp)ite the fact that he is batting an even .300. However, several players are pressing him closely . . . .Jim Jarrett, outfielder, is the only player with an unblemished fielding record. Hie has had seven put outs and one assist. Al Spotts, first baseman, has only three errors, 76 put outs, seven dlouble plays, and three assists for a .963 fielding mark.. Cox has been in on nine (double plays. t, are: John Speers, Jimmy Potter, are now participatingw in the state this season, the team entered the mps and winners of 13 state crowns Stockings Tuesday but have beaten man. Berry Takes Hitting Lead Buddy Berry, third baseman, leads the Gamecock hitters with .343. He has 12 hits in 35 times at bat and is followed closely by Shortstop Toni Hofferth with 15 hits in 45 trips for a .333 average. Pitcher-outfielder Otis Ravil, hitting .306, and another pitcher outfielder, Gene Molnar. with .300 are the only other players hitting in the .300 bracket. Sigma Chi, last year's champ, won the meet piling up 33 points against I(6 for Phi Sigma Kappa, their inarest rival. The highlight of the ivet will be the Farr Mile, the winner o which will receive a trophy on Awards D)ay. Starting yesterday, the contest will end Saturday. Presbyterian, perennial state champs, will once again be favored. The Blue Hose have lost only to Duke University in regular play and walloped the Gamecocks 9-0 last Tuesday. However, the Carolina netmen, who failed to win a match last season, have a somewhat impres sive record with wins over the College of Charleston, Furman, Erskine and Clemson. They are matched by NROTC in Independent League I. Ten. 29 and the Legal Eagles are both unbeaten after one game in League II. Pi KA rolled over Kappa Sig 18-3 in a one-sided affair and Pi Kappa Phi ran up a 17-3 score against Phi Epsilon Pi. Sigma Nu outscored KA 15-12. Sigma Phi Epsilon edged by Sigma Chi 9-8 and in another squeaker SAE beat Phi Kappa Sig 9-7. In the week's only other fraternity game Lambda Chi dropped Pi KA 7-3.
