Track T< avored in iangular Contest By SONNY GRAY Staff Reporter A victory-spirited Gamecock track team will journey to David son tomorrow to enter a triangular meet with The Citadel and David son. Since the cinder-men have previously beaten both these teams by considerable margins, they will undoubtedly be favored to give a repeat performance. The Gamecocks opened the sea son by losing to a strong Duke team 79 to 59, but have redeemed themselves since by defeating Georgia, 80-62, N. C. State, 75 46%, Citadel, 75-42%, and David son, 81-50. Freshmen Carry Load Surprisingly strong in the con ference this year, the Gamecocks have been somewhat dependant on freshmen to carry the majority of the load in these first few meets. Sonny Wilcher, dashman from Macon, Ga., has been one of the brightest prospects in the fresh men group thus far, and has been highly responsible for the increas ing improvement of the team. He is used primarily in the 440 and 220 yard dashes. Joe Def ore, shotput; Ted Robinson, pole vault; and Freddie Roberts, 880 yard man, have also been outstanding. Track Future Bright Veterans Garn McBride, Bobby Drawdy, Smokey Darouse, Gene Brown, Jack Blair, Jack Martin, and Erni Hulon, plus other im proving freshmen, certainly make the Gamecock track future bright. Last week the Gamecocks won "Teir third straight track meet by beating Davidson 81-50. Winning easily, Carolina ran up a large margin of points, and von 12 out of 15 possible first place events. Bobby Drawdy, junior from Eutaw Springs, won three first places. Drawdy outran the field in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and took first place in the javelin as he grabbed high scoring honors of the day with 15 points. Garn McBride of Columbia established one of his finest times of the season in the mile run, win ning easily at 4:35.0. McBride also came in second in the 880 yard run behind Carolina's Freddie Roberta. Sonny Wilcher, the freshman flash, was held out of the 220 yard run as the score mounted. However, he turned in another commendable effort in the 440 yard dash, outdistancing the field in 50.8 seconds. He also ran in the mile relay. Robinson Improves Ted Robinson, freshman pole vaulter from Rock Hill, turned in :one of the better performances of the day as he cleared 12 feet, four inches. Smokey Darouse has pre Sviously been the number one man in this event. Davidson took all three places in the discus, but Carolina swept the javelin and high jump competition. Drawdy won the javelin with a creditable 175', 2%", and Jack Martin of Carolina placed first in the high jump, clearing an even six feet, four Inches. Bitter defeat was in store for Davidson in the mile relay. This vsthe first defeat in four meets in this event for the Wildcats, but the combination of Heyward Hornsby, Leon Cunningham, Fred die Roberts, and Sonny Wilcher proved too much and the Game cooks soared in for first place honors at 8:29.8. The 3amecocks let two chances slip 3y earlier in the season as the Bulldogs downed them twice in .harleston, 11-4 and 4-2. Both these games were marked )y numerous Gamecock errors, ight of them coming in the first game and two more in the second. Pitcher Uncertain Since the team played a two 6ame series with Furman Monday and Tuesday, it is not certain who will be given the nod to start on the hill for Carolina. Coach Petoskey may have Howard or Heyward Tunstall, Otis Rawl, Jim Godwin, or Billy Frierson pitching. Frierson, a left-hander, has been called on only once this season. rhat was against Furman in the opener where he appeared for only two-thirds of an inning. Johnny Gramling, a righthander who was out on injuries until two weeks ago, hasn't been called on for starting duties, either, although he appeared for an inning against Clemson. Gramling is primarily a reliefer, but may be called upon to start-depending on the status of the other hurlers after the Furman games. The entire season has been marred for the unpredictable Gameroosters by errors and the absence of clutch hitting. As a whole, however, the team hitting has been better than anticipated. Infield Combination The infield may be the same combination used against N. C. State, although changes are likely being made as this issue goes to press.
