RALPH GREGORY, Sports Ediror Mike Love.joy Irv Liskov Bill Liggett Murray Seaman RALPH GREGORY: Hi, Sport! Tonight's game with Davidson will be one of the most important of the season to Coach Frank Johnson's basketball Gamecocks. A win tonight would put Carolina within at least one game of the Southern Conference playoffs. They would possibly have enough wins to insure a spot in the tourney. They would still have a home game left to get another win and wrap up an invitation. That would be a clash with Wake Forest Monday night. Wake Forest still has a chance to rate a bid themselves so you can bet they won't be loafing when they visit here. However, the Gamecocks have beaten the Deacons by a size able margin in an early season exhibition game in Charlotte. Another, however, is the vast improvement shown by the Deacons. They have beaten North Carolina twice and are mighty tough when they hit a hot night. Davidson, too, will be out to dump the Gamecocks since (ARO,1 tonight's clash between these two teams is the rubber game of a three game series. The l'. MORRISON Wildcats won the first game by a 20 point margin in the Charlotte Invitational tourney. Carolina visited Davidson a week later and dumped the Wildcats by about the same margin. Carolina's up and down style of play should be oi the down side again for tonight's game. Since the first of the season the Gamecocks have been hot one game and way off for the next. Against Furman last week they were miserable, especially with their shooting. They hit only 28 per cent from the floor. Tuesday night they visited the North Carolina Tar Hleels and hit 62 per cent in the first half and finished the game with a 42 per cent mark. That kind of shooting is enough to beat most any team and certainly enough to take the Wild cats or Wake Forest. In tonight's starting lineup will be five men who are over the 150 point mark for the season. As a team they have averaged 70 points per game. Dwane Morrison has 393 points for the season, more than I any forward has ever had for USC in one season. Morrison has averaged 20.7 points per game for the 19 games he has played. Running second is Johnny Peterson with 254 points and a 14.1 average. Pitted against this lineup for Davidson will be a fairly tall team that relies mostly on speed for its offense. if their fast break is right the Wildcats can be trouble as they proved in Charlotte. Here's the lineup that will take the floor tonight against Davidson: Player G Pts. Ave. F--Morrison 19 393 20.7 F--Hofferth 19 140 7.3 C-Peterson 18 254 14.1 G--Cox 19 165 8.7 G-Best 17 166 9.8 FINAL APPEARANCE Making their final appearance in the Carolina Fieldl H ouse Monday night against Wake Forest will be three of the better basketball players to star for (Carolina in many years. One is high-scoring D)wane Morrison and the other two are pint-sizedl guardls Mickey Best and D)on ('ox. Cox has been the playmaker for Carolina since his sop)ho more year. Consistently a fine floor man he has teamed with Mickey Best to give the Gamecocks two of the smoother guards in the conference. Best and Morrison enjoyed only two seasons with the Gamecocks since they were Junior college transfers. They have won a spot in most USC basketball fans' hearts, how ever, with their fine play. Coming here last year Morrison andl Best immediately landed a spot on the first team and helped put the Gamecocks in the conference tourney. This year they' have almost accomplished the same feat. SWIMMERS LOSE AGAIN The Carolina swimming team lost a thrilling meet with Clemson Wednesday afternoon at the local pool, when they were beaten on the final event, the 400-yard relay. Up to the last race the Gamecocks led 39-38, but the final seven p)oints gave Clemson the win, 45-39. The water Birds took more than their share of firsts but couldn't score enough on the se(condls andl thirds. They took first in six of the events. .Johnny Clements continued his fine (living andl continued winning, lHe has not been heaten since he startedl at the beginning of this semester. JUST CHECKIN' .. . In 19 games this year D)wane Morrison has beeni held to less than 20 points only six times. lHe has been over the 25 mark four times . . . Th Gamecocks had men put out of games because of fouls only 12 times during the first 19 games. They averaged about 17 fouls per game . . . North Carolina's Al Lifson scored 27 points against the Gamecocks Tuesday night and fouled out before the game ended, lHe is a freshman from New Jersey and is well above the 300 point mark in his first season . . . The Southern Conference swim.. ming championships will be held in North Carolina's Bowman Gray pool on February 28-March 1. The meet is an individlual championship affair and will be entered bvy the Carolina team.
