Iryouts For Announced Jimmy Ratliff, coach of the Carolina swimming team, has an nounced that tryouts for the 1951 team will begin next week. All students who are interested should meet at the pool on Friday, Sep tember 28, at 5:15, for a tryout. Both old students and freshmen are urged to try for a berth on the team if they possess any aquatic ability. Freshmen are eligible to compete in varsity com petition this year. The crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, and diving are the styles used in intercollegiate competition. Included In most meets are swims ranging from 50 yards to 440 yards. There is also a 800 medley included in the relays. In this event the first man uses the crawl; the second man the back crawl; the third man -uses the breast stroke and the last man has a choice of any of the first three. Last year Coach Ratliff had sev eral men to place in the state swim meet which was held at the local pool. His team did not fare so well in the regular season meets, because of a lack of depth. Most of the time his men could place in every event that they entered but his lack of reserves cost many of the second and third places which usually mean the difference in winning and losing a meet. Coach Ratliff also announced the following schedule for recreational swimming. During this period stu dents are allowed to swim in the pool at no charge and under the supervision of Ratliff. The schedule: Mondays 5.6 Tuesdays 7-9 Wednesdays 5.6 Thursdays 7-9 Professor Brown was forced to leave town for one day on urgent lusiness. Swim Team By Ratliff Basketball Schedule The 1951-52 basketball schedule has been announced by the uni versity athletic department and it is made up of 21 games. Ten of these will be at home beginning with the Citadel game December 5. The team will be built around four veterans, Dwane Morrison, Mickey Best, Don Cox and Johnny Peterson. The only player missing from last year's starting five will be Jim Slaughter, 6-foot, 11-inch center who shattered all existing state records during his career with the Gamecocks. This play occurred right on th and took control of the ball. -(US Intramura To Open0 By MIKE LOVEJOY The 1951 Intramural Sports pro gram will officially get under way on October 1, this coming Monday. At this time the volleyball season is to begin, according to informa tion received from Wilma Hughes, student director of the program. Meetings were held in the Intra mural Office last Monday with representatives from teams in each league (Fraternity and Independ ent) to organize the teams and put them in their respective divisions. Much to the dismay of Mr. Hughes only representatives from three independent teams appeared and they were from Tenements 29, i & 5, and 2 & 3. Mr. Hughes stated that if no more teams showed up it would be impossible to organize a good Intramural pro gram. He also commented that the schedule will be made out late this week and if the teams are not entered before that time they will not be included. Mr. Hughes 'vent on to say, "I do not understand the lack of in terest of the 'Independents' when they have such fine material and are capable of turning out top teams in volleyball as well as the rest of the sDorts nroo-rama. Last season found Sigma Chi coming out on top in one league and Lambda Chi and Sigma Alpha Ep silon deadlocked for top honors in the other. Sigma Chi annexed the All-Fraternity crown but was de feated by the Carovets, the sur vivors of the All-Independent play offs, for the Campus Champion ship. The schedules, for both leagues, will be such that each team will meet the other "fella" once during the course of the season. This will be followed by the Inter-league tournaments and then the campus championship will be decided, if time permits. The touch football campaign will get under way immediately follow ing the return from Thanksgiving holidats and will run for about a month. There is expected a greater interest in this sport and there fore the Independent League will probably be larger.
