RALPH GREGORY, Sports Editor Frank Wright Fred McAllister James B. Sims RALPH GREGORY: ----------------------- With nothing to gain but revenge, the Gamecocks begin a two-game series tonight in Orangeburg against the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers have already clinched the championship of the southern division of the Southern Conference and have nothing to lose as far as their standing is concerned. They beat Furman Tuesday to insure a playoff with the northern division leader. For the Birds it will be a chance to beat their old rivals and better their 6-13 record. The Tigers have already beaten the Birds twice this season, pulling the first game out in the late innings, 8-6 and trouncing the Gamecock nine in the sec ond game 11-1. Righthander Grady Faircloth, who lost the first game de spite pitching a fine game, will probably start the game to night. He has won his last two decisions and holds a 3 won-4 lost record to the present time. His latest win was a 6-5 de cision over North Carolina State, one of the two Southern Conference teams to beat Clemson. Tomorrow's game, which will be played on Davis Field, will likely see Bill Camp toe the slab for the Gamecocks. Bill's record is 2-6. He was the loser in the North Carolina game. Grady Faircloth was tight in the clutch against the Wolf pack from North Carolina State and with more effective sup port could have hurled his third shutout of the year. As it was, it took 10 innings for the win and a lot of heavy hitting and heads up play to win the game. Against the Tar Heels it was a combination of heavy hit ting by the North Carolina team and some ineffective field ing that led to the lopsided score. Only two games remain on the schedule after the Clem son series. This pair is a doubleheader against The Citadel next Tuesday. In an earlier twin bill against the Buldogs, the Gamecocks walked off with an easy win in the nightcap after a tense 2-0 win in the opener. Just Checkin .. . Bobby Rogers hit the first home run of his enllege cnrP4r against N. C. State in the fifth inning with one man on to pull the Birds into the lead 3-2 ... When State scored in the first inning it snapped an 11-inning shutout streak for Grady Faircloth. He had not been scored on since the first Davidson game. During the interval he went nine innings against The Citadel without allowing a run and pitched 2 innings in relief against Davidson . . . Little Johnny Stokes started off slowly this year getting only one hit in the first three games. Since then, however, Johnny has really been hitting the ball. He has gone hitless only twice since those early games. His latest hitting was against North Carolina. He was the only Game cock to get more than one hit . . . Bobby Rogers was halted in the North Carolina game and collared without a hit. It snapped a six-game hitting streak for Bobby . .. When Char ley Stephenson scored the winning run in the tenth inning against N. C. State it was not the first crucial run he has scored this year. He scored the run in the ninth inning of the fourteen frame marathon against Duke that forced the game into extra innings. In the ninth inning of the first Davidson game he scored the winning run on Rube Well's single... Rube Wells turned in another defensive gem against N. C. " In Twc OpenerlnOrang 2nd Game Here The Gamecock baseball team will attempt to get back on the winning trail tonight in Orangeburg against the Clemson Tigers. A five-game winning streak was snapped by North Carolina's Tar Heels last Saturday. The Tigers, already win ners in the southern division of the conference, have previously beaten the Birds twice. When the Gamecocks edged N. C. State 6-5 last Friday it marked their sixth win of the year and the fifth in a row. They parlayed twelve hits and Grady Faircloth's neat eight-hit job on the Wolfpack for the ten-inning win. The next afternoon they lost their hitting eye, however, and succumbed 13-3. Clemson has lost only twice in side the conference and are already assured of a playoff spot for the Conference championship. They walloped Furman Tuesday, 12-2, to clinch the southern title. In an earlier two-game series in Clem son the Tigers beat the Gamecocks twice.
