STROUGH Did you know that the architect - of many of the buildings on the Carolina campus was also architect for the Washington monument in the nation's capital? Robert Mills attained nationat recognition for his leadership in the nineteenth century revival of Greek architec ture, but the state seems to have forgotten that he was born In Charleston and spent much of his life in the state. Mills began his career in Wash ington where he had an appren ticeship under the head architect of the capitol. The records are not straight because he usually did not sign his draw ings. There is proof, however, that j when the Clariosophic Society de cided to erect a monument in honor of Jonathan Maxcy, they had Mills design the monument. r Not only has the state forgotten I that Mills was a great architect, d but it has overlooked the fact that he was ahead of his day in his d architectural ideas.
