Fowl Or Fair by Lloyd H"funtington The Razing Problem Efforts have been made this year to reinstitute the old custom of hazing freshmen. This is indeed an old and honor able custoid practiced in universities everywhere. However, the situation got out of hand a few years ago and hazing was abolished in every state school in South Carolina. Frankly this writer can't see the need for state laws and university regulations designed to teach a group of adults the rules of ordinary decent behavior. Such laws do exist, however, which prevent hazing on this and every state college campus in South Carolina. Physical abuse should certainly be abolished. Several situ ations have arisen in the past at South Carolina institutions which resulted in embarrassment for the administration and sometimes even serious injury to students. These things of course are dangerous and should be prohibited. It seems, however, that some mid-point could be reached whereby freshmen could be initiated into the University without, raising the ire of the administration. This column suggests that one week of the fall semester be set aside for the formal initiation of all freshmen. The week of the Carolina-Clemson game would be ideal since the campus already has an air of gayety and festivity. Under the guidance of the Student Council which would be in charge of all arrangements and violations set down for the week a series of events could be planned which would enliven the campus. The hazing program, or rat parade could terminate with a big program before the game started between the Birds and the Tigem. Such a program would add to the already festive air of this week and would fit in nicely with customs already estab lished as a traditional part of the week. There are some big husky freshmen around who would make fine bell-ringers. If hazing is to be brought back at all some such organiza tion is a definite necessity. Uncurbed, the practice of initiat ing freshmen would soon degenerate into the monster that it was at one time and would soon be abolished again. A Word About Pop Meetings The pep meeting last Thursday was most encouraging. About 2000 students were present as Coach Rex Enright made a short talk and then stood by as the entire football team was presented to the students. It was the finest dem onstration of school spirit that has been on this campus ini recent years. Tonight the Student Council is hoiding another pep meet ing. It is to be feared from talk hoard around the campus this week that an old, old story is about to be repeated. School spirit after the loss to Furman is definitely on the wane. That's a thing that has often happened in the past. The Birds play a fairly good ball game and the students begin having pipe dreams. For a week everyone is happy and the football team is Idolized. Then the next week every thing goes wrong. The Birds are sloppy and the students withdraw their support. Perhaps this is a common affliction with student bodies everywhere. It would seem a more practicable, and' happier solution, if the students could meet each game with the same sense of good fellowship that goes into a pre-seasoni pep meeting. So let's all go out to the rally and cheer the Birds on to their best efforts against the powerful North Carolina Tar Heels tomorrow. Incidentally look for a good show tomorrow. Charley Jus tice and his mates are one of the most colorful teams in the country. They bring to Columbia one of the most talked about teams ever to hit the South. Also the Gamecocka should be up for this one arnd ready to battle the Tar Heela right down to the finish line. None of the smart money favors the Birds to come within three touchdowns -of the North Carolinians but it wouldn't be too much of a shock to see the Birds make a close hard-fought contest of it. Enright has had the boys working hard and except for a couple of injure theGaemecocks should be ready to go. Vic Hendriokson may be anissing from the lineup with a leg Injury. ' Carolina buckled down to wo that year with only one varsi veteran and a few inen of the scrub team. After two weeks practice t Gametocks began the only un feated season in the school's fo ball history. They defeated the C lege of Charleston 14-4; Geori Medical College 4-0; and a n foe, the Citadel 12-0. The spirit of Carolina was pr4 ably the greatest that year th any other. This is evidenced the fact that everyone was writi poems, features, and jokes on I Gamecocks and their opponer Notices were seen about the ca pus for students to try out for I team, whether they knew how play the game or not. A new; of yells was worked up for eve game and the records state ti most of the students commit1 these yells to memory. The bi cheer of 1907 was: Here's to Carolina, drink down, drink her down!
