C., Mor day to enter the annual Souther Conference run to be held at N C. State College. It will compet with approximately ten other con ference schools for the champion ship. The team was organized throug the initiative of the students an has been working out under th direction of Jim Meriwether, wh was appointed coach. While othe conference teams have been pre paring since August, the Game cock harriers have but a mont of work behind them and shoul give a good showing against othe teams also handicapped by ]ai starts. With three members of la: year's state track champions ar several promising freshmen, tli harriers have, according to Mer wether, been conscientiously pr paring for their initial debut. Wayne Brackett, Florence fresl man, appears to be the outstanc ing contender for individu honors. Brackett has paced ti -team in workouts thus far. Meriwether, half nmiler on la year's track team, is again nei the top of the pack after losir a week of training because of s injured foot. Foster Marshall and Samn Dennis, also track men of la year, have looked good in ear workouts. Another harrier havir considerable experience is Hacd -Walker who ran on the Eau Clai: State Teachers' college team whi in the service. John McPTherson also ran cros country while in service at tl Jacksonville Naval Air Statio "Shine" Jones and Nick Nichol inexperienced freshmen who wi be out for the distance events the spring, round out the team < eight. The Gamecocks have not been defeated by a Palmetto state team since the Clemson game of 1944. Friday's game at Orangeburg was a rather drab clincher to the state title. Rain started falling shortly after the opening kick off, slowing-up action consider ably, but the Birds scored twice during many trips up and down the field. Harry DeLoach made the first Carolina touchdown on a fine 19 yard run in the second quarter, and Bobby Gilei added the other on a short jaunt in the final. The only thing spectacular about the game was how the Gamecocks could run up so much yardage and score but twice. a Approximately 10,000 souls saw the Gamecocks gain every possible i t way but walking on their hands, t yet, usually when Carolina came - in sight of the Bulldog goal, a - timely penalty, a nice defensive play by a Citadel man or a re laxed offense would end the drive. ~ It was a typical Carolina-Citadel Ll game. b Carolina backs fattened their c yardage totals, while the linemen F ? toyed with the Bulldog's offensive w * guns.
