The University of South Caro
lina is officially South Carolina
football champion by virtue of its
12-0 win over The Citadel
Friday afternoon at Orange
burg. The Gamecocks have not
been defeated by a Palmetto state
team since the Clemson game of
1944.
Friday's game at Orangeburg
was a rather drab clincher to the
state title. Rain started falling
shortly after the opening kick
off, slowing-up action consider
ably, but the Birds scored twice
during many trips up and down
the field.
Harry DeLoach made the first
Carolina touchdown on a fine 19
yard run in the second quarter,
and Bobby Gilei added the other
on a short jaunt in the final. The
only thing spectacular about the
game was how the Gamecocks
could run up so much yardage and
score but twice. a
