SPORTORAMA By DON BARTON GENTLEMAN'S GAME? Presbyterian College's tennis team won its sixth con secutive state championship this year. This school is to be commended on the prominent place it has gained among tennis teams in the South by virtue of the talented teams it produced before the war. P. C. had a well-rounded team this year, having a fine time trimming Newberry, Erskine, Wofford, Citadel, Col lege of Charleston, South Carolina, and a few others, while dropping matches to Duke and Kalamazoo. This school should be well-versed on tennis ethics, in that it makes con certed efforts to "attract" fine players from hither and yon. Something occurred in the state tennis tournament this year that left a bad taste in many persons' mouths, how ever. Players advancing to the final rounds were required to play several matches Friday in order to reduce the field and set the stage for the finals. Gus Chreitzberg, who op posed Bob Spurrier in the finals, played four matches, one of them being a gruelling three-set affair in the semi-finals. Well, Spurrier was supposed to play in the semi-finals, too, but it so happened that he was matched against a teammate, Bill Harper. Harper suddenly withdrew from the singles competition, giving Spurrier a free pass to the finals and a rest from exertion and nervous strain, an important factor in a tennis tournament. Chreitzberg "sweated it out" in the hard way. Spurrier won the singles crown, which looks fine to the general public, but there are a lot of tennis players who were around for the tournament who have less respect for the 1947 title as a result of that incident. They appreciate tennis ability, but they also look for square-shooting all the way around. Presbyterian has always had an untarnished record in athletics, as far as we know, so we hate to see something like that happen under the name of that school. BON VOYAGE The finale for all USC spring sports will take place at Clemson Friday and Saturday, as the up-and-down Game cocks face Clemson's state leaders. A double-victory over the Tigers would be a shot in the arm to a rather dismal season for the Birds, and we're looking for our nine to pro duce. We believe that Coach Smith has the pitching to do it this time, if the hurlers have air-tight fielding and good hitting to back 'em up. W Clemson will be favored to continue their mop-up of state teams against us, but the baseball, too, takes some funny hops, so we haven't counted it a lost cause. We have a recol lection of another Tiger team that was favored in a track meet at Clinton a couple of weeks ago. Favorites do lose sometimes, don't they? Rucks had already been pre sented the second place medal, when the North Carolina State coach protested that Rucks had violated a conference ruling that a runner must be two yards ahead of an opponent before crossing over to pass him. As a result Chambers of State was given sec ond place. Rucks was crossing over from the sixth lane to take over the lead as another runner pulled up in the inside lane, narrowing Rucks' passing margin to about one yard. Had Rucks gone in behind the runner instead of go ing ahead, despite the insuffi cient margin, it would have forced him to break his stride, creating a great handicap. Neighborgall overtook Rucks and broke the tape, with Cham bers finishing third. Golf Team Drops Final Match To Ga. Tech Quartet Georgia Tech defeated the Gamecock golfers 17 1/2-1/2 Sat urday on the Columbia Country club links in the last match of the year for the locals. ~ The Yel low Jackets took every match 3-0 except for the half-point picked up by Bob Chapman in his match. The Carolina lineup for this match, as for others this year, was Bob Thoren, Bob Chapman, Johnny Roberts, and Ed Jeter. Duke finished far behind in second place with 42 points, followed by Maryland and North Carolina State. South Carolina had five entries in the meet, Scooter Rucks, Jim Ratliff, Droopy Atwell, Richard Thornton, and Ernie Lawhorne, but only Rucks was able to qualify. In the preliminaries Friday, Rucks was first in the 440-yard dash, and in the 220-yard dash. In the finals Saturday, Rucks placed third in the 220-yard dash and was disqualified on a foul in the quarter-mile event. This meet closed the season for the local tracksters, who won the south Carolina championship.
