BEST BY TEST Congratulations to Chuck Spann and Ray Avant, Caro lina's first Southern Conference champions for 1947. Sporto rama's two "mistaken identity" victims had tourney oppon ents wishing they were two other people, and consequentl3 situated the USC boxing outfit as third best in the confer ence. About these two champs, we would like to boast, "WE told you so !" But, then, it was so obvious all along that the3 were the best in their classes. Speaking of a team that didn't win a match, this mighi sound ridiculous, but Carolina could have walked off witr top honors had not lady luck frowned upon her. If Ray White Bob Wilson, and Chris Hitopoulos had been able to participat( in the tournament, our chances would have been boostec considerably, probably enough to raise our total points abovE the rest of the field. That's so much water under the bridge, though. We cam( in third, and are thankful for that. To those who didn't farE so well as Ray and Chuck-to Dawes, Delk, Sindler, and Watson-we appreciate your efforts and the part you played in representing Carolina. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT Toward the latter part of this semester Carolina students will go to the polls and select one person out of the some 4, 400 at this school whom they consider the university's out standing athlete. The person chosen for this honor will bE presented with the handsome Adam Hat trophy, now on dis play in the canteen. This subject is being called to the attention of the studeni body so that they might be giving it their serious thought, and, thereby, be fully prepared to vote intelligently when the time comes. This is a serious matter and should be giver more than just a moment's meditation. The football and basketball seasons are over, and the box ing schedule is almost concluded, but track, baseball, golf, and tennis are just coming into the limelight. One athlete participating in one or more of these seven sports is best qualified to receive the award as the most outstanding. It is up to us to choose the most deserving from among them. We quote from a letter received from the Adam Hat Wel fare Committee, under the chairmanship of Jack Dempsey: "Oddly enough attainment rates last among the requisites outlined on the contest ballot. Enthusiasm, cooperation, and sportsmanship are the primary qualifications in this com petition, which is designed to foster the embracing of demo cratic fundamentals in athletic programs along with active participation." That paragraph is self-explanatory and gives you an out line of what qualities to keep in mind as you make your choice. Carolina has enough outstanding athletes to cause some hesitation in naming the top one. Take a good look at the trophy and realize that it repre sents something sacred in the life of the University. 'Clemson Lead The University of South Caro lina's "gold dust twins" Ray Avant and Chuck Spann, added more laurels to the Gamecock roost last Saturday night in annexing their respective events, as the Southern Conference mittmen closed their tourney. Bringing home the only prises for Carolina, the twins rattled each opponent well in the 145 and 175 pound classes. Other representa tives for the Garnet and Black fell by the wayside in the Confer ence events. Avant and Spann, both, had no trouble with the prelims and carried the mail from there into the finals and then on to pay dirt. The 145 pound pride of George town, S. C., did away with his foe, Tom Maloney of the University of Maryland, after 31 seconds of the second round had slipped by. Spann, on the other hand, opened a cut over Bob Hafer's- right eye as the first round drew to a close and the Plant City, Florida lad took the decision. Hafer, too, was representing the Terrapins of Maryland. The final accountings in the con ference matches found Maryland out on top with an emmassed total of 22 points. The Clemson Tiger clawed its way into second money with 19, while the Gamecocks held firmly onto the "show" slot with 10 counters. North Carolina and Citadel brought up the remainder of the field with 8 and 5 markers respectively. Notice!!! Tomorrow night in the Univer sity swimming pool, at seven o'clock, there will be a meeting of all those interested in an intra mural swimming contest. Repre sentatives of all Fraternities, tene- r ments and other men's organiza tions are urged to attend, so that definite plans can be laid.
