Cu Ban Bring Chick'en In The Rough By CHICK SHIELS This afternoon at 2:340 the mighty 'Bama arrives at the Stadium to do battle with the Garnet and Black. 'Bama, who gave Southern Cal a bad time in the Tournament of Roses last year will face the finest team that the University of South Carolina has had in many a moon. Coach Rex En right isn't saying a lot about the game or its outcome for he, too, knows that The Crimson Tide is a potent aggra gation. Being the bottom man on the totem pole, we wish the Gamecocks the best of luck and give a meaningful pat on the back for a successful afternoon and a Victory. An upset is not entirely out of the picture. It has been evidenced before in these early stages of the 1946 season in such matches as the North Carolina State win over the talent laden Duke eleven,,the University of Cincinnati's 15-6 count on last years' BIG NINE Champions, Indiana and others. Know this-that the Carolina men-of-war will be on the turf ready to give all for a win today. The team is in fine fittle with all of the injured list about cleared up which means a lot to any coach. This afternoon's tussle will be a fine ball game and the burley, 'Bama boys might be sur prised at the outcome!.!. Georgetown University of Washington, has been trying something comparatively new in the annals of football tricks. The Capital Club, recently brought into play an Oxy gen Recessitator which administers a dose of 0-2 to the tired grid warriors after a long run or a gruelling play. It has worked very successfully and the principle is being given a chance down this way. The facts are these: the tired athlete is taken from the game and an Oxygen mask is placed over his face, in thirty seconds the gridster feels "ready"-he is relaxed with all of the pangs of fatigue gone. Sounds good! This newcomer to football will be aired here at Carolina in the very near future, and promises to be almost revolution ary in reviving the footballers. Mr. Dumas Turner (of the DEEP SOOTH Turner's) wishes to announce that the ushers for Saturday's bout with Alabama will report to the gate nearest the scoreboard at 12:30. These men will probably see a lot of action during the course of the P. M. On Top of the Ole Chicken House: Orchids to Bill Keith (Bill, Boyeeeee), Skibo Dellenger, Helen Childress, Bette J. "Ish" Moore dropped your corres pondent a line the other day, said that he was out on the West Coast having a gay-ole time with some of the other ex-Gamecocks . . . Ishmeal, as you all will remember, was the big man in the sports dept. for many a moon . . . the Tarheel lad said that he wished the gang the best of luck during the season and gave his regards to the entire clan ...Moe Brown, former RO here, is now at Albion College in Mich . .. Moe did his bit for the J-V basketballers in the days gone by . . . Big Steve Trewhella, past mainstay on the hardwood five, dropped into the Capital City last week end to see the boys in action . .. Tennessee over Duke-These battles are always tough ones, but Bob Neyland's boys ought to come through again. Previously, Alabama had beaten Furman by three touchdowns, after having to come from behind. Both these games left doubt as to the invinci bility of the Crimson Tide, and the set-up seems perfect for South Carolina to disprove this alto gether. However, the experts say, "Not a chance." Indications are that twenty four thousand people will take time out to see if the Birds can turn the trick, so Carolina Sta dium will be the scene of great activity when game time rolls around. Carolina-Alabama Series History This year's game between Ala bama and South Carolina will be the fourth meeting of the two schools. Alabama defeated the Gamecocks 20-0 in 1937, 29-0 in 1941, and 55-0 last year. Alabama's only other appearance in Colum bia was on October 25, 1905, when Clemson defeated the Tide, 25-0. Out of 423 football games played since the sport was inau gurated at Alabama in 1892, the Tide has never lost a game by the margin of an extra point. Alabama's Fred Grant, 180 pound fullback from Christian burg, Va., is probably the only player ever to lead two major col lege conferences in scoring. As a freshman at Wake Forest in 1948, Grant led the Southern conference pointmakers and paced the South eastern conference scores last sea son when he tallied 66 points. while 'Bama has amassed a total of 104 points in the short s6ries.
