Sigm Nu To Howdy folks . . . at least you can't complain about mo notony as far as the authorship of your society column is concerned ... We're number four on the hit parade . . . be lieve it or not, though, we're planning to stick with you for a while ... By the way, if our style seems vaguely familiar to some of you veterans, could be it's because we occasionally "ghost-wrote" this column a few years back ... Please don't count the years aloud, but remember when Zuckerman was "Gimecock" editor ... and the "machine" ran campus poli tics? PARTIES AND MORE PARTIES... Never a night goes by without at least a couple of shindigs of one kind or another . . . F'r instance, the Phi Sigma Kappa's cabaret affair at the Legion hut last Saturday, rated one of the best by the brothers and their guests . . . Incidentally, a bouquet of Four Roses to the Phi Sigs for being first in with their news for the column this time . . . Also last Saturday night saw the Phi Eps hayriding to Ses qui for a weiner roast , . . must have been quite an affair ..* . nearly a hundred people, we hear, among them Don Rosen, a Phi Ep from Atlanta, and some of the Carolina alums ... Wednesday night the KAs invaded the Jefferson Hotel rathskellar for a cabaret party for their rushees and dates ... as always, it was a bang-up success ... AFTER THE ALABAMA GAME ... No matter what figures go up on the scoreboard after the final whistle blows this afternoon, everyone is planning to celebrate in a big way tonight ... The Pi KA's have a buffet supper and informal dance on the schedule . . . The Pi Kappa Phi's will journey Lexingtonward to brother John Caroll's lake-side cabin for a supper and-for themselves, dates and rushees ... That's a wonderful place for it, too, Pi Kapps ... And that night the Phi Sigs take over the rathskellar at the Jefferson for an informal dance, having as their guest of honor one of the fraternity's national representatives ... Lambda Chi will highlight their rushing with a semi-formal e dance at Sloan's studio ODDS'N'ENDS... The Pi KA's have elected new officers for the year . . . Hugh Wiles, president; Bill Charles, vice-president; Elden Penney, treasurer; Fred Kimbraugh, secretary, and "Sonny" Newton, pledge master ... Nell Mayer, former president 'of Pi Phi, has a brand new engagement ring ... the lucky guy is Lee B. Taylor ... The Chi O's had several alums as visitors over the weekend, among them Jo Alice McMillan, Toozie Johnston, and Agnes McBride ... They have also added a new active to their rolls, Mary Ann Thrasher, transfer from Queens . . . Betty Culler, Chi 0, and Rhett Jackson, KS, were married Saturday night . . . Delta Zeta's are pledging Mary Baxter and celebrating with a formal dinner at the Wade Hampton Hotel . . . Eddie Helms, Phi Kappa Sigma, has a pretty fine dance band, we hear, composed of Carolina students ..membprs are Charlie Walters, Bill Burns, Gra ham Hendley, Clarence McEarchern, Fred Locke, and William Casson . . . Y.W.C.A.Elects Stone Secretary Ann Stone, a junior in the School of Arts and Sciences was elected secretary of Y. W. C. A. at the General "Y" meeting Thurs day in, Wade Hampton lobby. Ann replaces Bert Hemingway who was elected last spring, but who resigned last week. Jean Turner, president of the Y. W. C. A., announced that the state "Y" retreat would be held Oct. 11, 12, 13, at Camp Long near Aiken, S. C. Any girl interested in attending may contact Jean Turner for information. There will be no regular Gen eral Y. W. C. A. meetings this year since each group has their own meetings once a week. Here after announcements will be made as to the date and time of the above meetings. C. and as al ways, there are those students who stage a last minute rush to reach the door just before the final key has been turned. Occasionally the race with time is achieved and then again it is not. The same fa miliar plea is usually the result, "Please don't restrict me this time" and in response, the house mother replies, "I am not going to restrict you, you have restricted yourself." Mrs. Martin said the girls from Wade Hampton had no favorite reason for being late, but that the "out-of-gas" story was quite popular. And then of course there's always the one where the truck broke down on a fraternity party. Now girls, when Father Time brings the hands of his watch near the fatal hour, remember that that extra minute tonight must be bartered for any nocturnal pleasures tomorrow. At C YWCA To Hold Bible Classes Beginning this Thursday, Oc tober 3, Bible study groups will be held at 5 p. m., in each of the girls' dormitories at the Univer sity. These groups, sponsored by the Y. W. C. A. Cabinet, will read and discuss the Bible. This project is a new one, and will last for a period of eight weeks. It replaces the nightly de votions which were formerly held in the dormitories. The group meetings will be In the room of the girl who has been selected chairman. There will be one meet ing on each hall in Maxcy, Wade Hampton, Wauchope, and two groups on each hall in Sims. A teacher will be chosen by the girls, and she will lead all the Bible dis cussions and conduct the classes. All girls are urged to attend these Bible study group meetings. In Sims they will be held in the following rooms of group chair men: First east, room 113, Doris Schmucher; first west, room 138, Joyce Hayes; second east, room 224, Polly Carnell and Ann Chris topher; second west, room 241, Margaret Sloan; third east, room 306, Frenchie Prossier; third west, room 351, Anne Stone. USC Will Install Phonetics Lab. The dream of the Modern Lan guage Department of the Univer sity of South Carolina to have a phonetics laboratory has at last been realized, Mrs. Sweeny, pro fessor of modern languages has announced. A recording machine and a rec ord player arrived to enable the French students to learn to speak the language more fluently. They will make records at the begin ning of the semester. After listen ing to and memorizing recordings of literary selections spoken by native Frenchmen, the students will again make records. In this way they can see their improve ments and detriments. LAIN BOYS" ports Take miething From The Boys The Girls... 6.95 -aroInra Alabama Theta hipcr Will Be Guests Of Dilia At Banquet And Dance The Delta Chaptor of Sigma Nu fraternity at the University of South Carolina will be Joined to night by the alumni and the Theta chapter of the University of Ala bama in the aelebration of the six tieth anniversary of its founding on this campus. Following the game, they will entertain at a semi-formal banquet and dantv In the Jefferson Hotel ballroom. The ballroom will be arranged in semi-cabaret style, the banquet table placed at one end and the orchestra at the other so that the couples may listen to their favor ite songs and dance at anytime during the evening. Music will be furnished by Woody Woodward and his orchestra. Dan Henderson is in charge of all the arrange ments. Serving as toastmaster will be G. G. Dowling, Jr., of Beaufort who commandeered the chapter in 1934-35. Also invited to the celebration are all Sigma Nu's in South Caro lina, and chapters from the Uni versity of North Carolina, North Carolina State, Duke University, Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia, and Emory University.
