ODK Will Elect New Members Jan. 17; Point List Published Chi Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa will hold its elections of the winter semester on Thursday, January 17. Tapping of the chosen members will follow shortly. President Reece Smith asks that all men, who are interested and eligible for consideration under the point system, found elsewhere in this issue, submit to any ODK member or Box 2148 their application with a list of their points. Omicron Delta Kappa, National Leadership Honor Society for men, was founded in 1814 at Washington and Lee University, and has circles in leading American colleges and universities. The society was established to recognize achievement in five phases of campus life: scholarship, athletics, social and religions affairs, publications, speech, music, and dramatic arts. Qual fications for membership are: character, scholarship and intelli gence, service and leadership in campus life, fellowship and consecration to democratic ideals. The rise and development of Omicron Delta Kappa was occa sioned by the belief among members of the student body and faculty of Washington and Lee University that all-round leader ship in college should be recognized, that representative ien in all phases of college should cooperate in worthwhile endeavor, and that outstanding students and faculty members should meet on a basis of mutual interest and understanding. Campus Library Shows Paintings by Chicago Artist The paintings of Morris Topchev sky, Chicago artist, will be on ex hibit on the third floor of the Me Kissick Memorial Library from January 3-17. Topchevsky, who has traveled throughout South America, did most of his paintings in Mexico. Ilie Specialized in sketching people, and many of his best works are of Mexican people. One of his most popular paint ings is called "Negro Youth," which is done in watercolor. Topehevsky does most of his paintings in watercolor, charcoal, and pencil. lie also does oil paint ings, but none of these are on dis play. Colburn Group The widely-known Colburn min cral collection, gathered by Burn ham S. Colburn, of Asheville, N. C., has been purchased by alumni and friends of the University of South Carolina and presented to the University's department of geology. Claude R. McMillan, past presi dent of the Alumni Association, and S. L. Hiemson The Hillel Society of the Univer. sity of South Carolina met last week at the Tree of Life Synagogue to hear an address by Rabbi Syd ney Ballon, who has just returned from overseas. But as Rabbi Ballon was ill in bed with the flu, a friend and for mer student at the University, Juney Hiemson, was present to speak on his adventures overseas. Refreshments were served by the refreshment committee, and plans for a dance in the near future and also a banquet for those seniors who are graduating were discussed. Richard Strickart, president, pre sided over the meeting. Newman Dance Given As Part Of Food Drive The Newman Club of the Uni versity of South Carolina sponsored a sports dance in the Field House Wednesday, December 19, with a can of food as the admission price. The dance was a part of the canned food drive put on by the Newman Club before the Christmas holl days. The food will be used for overseas relief and each sorority, fraternity, and campus organization was asked to pledge a pound of canned food for each of its mem bers. Officers of the Newman Club for this semester are John McGrath, president; Lou Marinucci, vice president; Sophie Mae Wolamin, secretarv; John Skalangya, treasu rer; Don Sommers, social chair man; and Ed McMillan, reporter. outstanding collections of minerals. Featuring a unique group of m1inerals from the South Appa lielacians, the Colburn collection contains much of great beauty as well as scientific interest and has been visited by hunldreds of scien tists and other interested persons. Contributors to the purchase of the collection included several hun dred alumni and friends of the Uni versity, all of whom were approach ed informally and gave sums rang ing from a few dollars to several hundred.
