William Archie Schiffley, 'SA, formerly of Orangeburg, recently was appointed director of veterans' education for South Carolina by Dr. J. If. lope, state superintend ent of education. Mr. Schiffley, a veteran of the first World War and a former stale commander of the American Legion. is charged with the responsibility of working out plans for education of men and women from this state under pro %isions of the GI Bill. He will work with private and public Institutions, both higher and secondary. Mr. Schiffley has been with the state department of education for 20 years. Judge Legare Bates, '24L, of Co lumbia, presided over the Richland county civil court this month, hav ing received his commission as judge of the court in March. lie succeeds Judge A. W. lolman, who resigned to accept the position of Columbia city recorder. Judge Bates, a Columbia attorney, has served as a member of the S. C. house of representatives, as prin cipal clerk of the state senate, and as a trustee of the University. In the First World War he served over seas with the 30th (Old Hickory) di vision.
