William Archie Schiffley, 'SA,
formerly of Orangeburg, recently
was appointed director of veterans'
education for South Carolina by
Dr. J. If. lope, state superintend
ent of education. Mr. Schiffley, a
veteran of the first World War and
a former stale commander of the
American Legion. is charged with
the responsibility of working out
plans for education of men and
women from this state under pro
%isions of the GI Bill. He will work
with private and public Institutions,
both higher and secondary. Mr.
Schiffley has been with the state
department of education for 20
years.
Arthur Bruce Hortr , Sr., '19A,
formerly of Heath Springs, makes
his home at 1009 Hillcrest avenue,
Columbia. He is cashier of the First
National Bank, Columbia.

Judge Legare Bates, '24L, of Co
lumbia, presided over the Richland
county civil court this month, hav
ing received his commission as
judge of the court in March. lie
succeeds Judge A. W. lolman, who
resigned to accept the position of
Columbia city recorder. Judge
Bates, a Columbia attorney, has
served as a member of the S. C.
house of representatives, as prin
cipal clerk of the state senate, and
as a trustee of the University. In
the First World War he served over
seas with the 30th (Old Hickory) di
vision.

member of the house of representa
tiwes from Newherry county, has
been elected judge of the Eighth ju
dicial circuit of South Carolina to
fill the uie.pire(d term of Judge C.
C. Feat herstone, who died last
month . Judge Griffith is a member
of the law firm of Blease and Grif
fith at Newberry. where he makes

operation of the station photogra

litions derpartment. Before entering
the service Majior Rtobinson was an
attorney in Columbia.
Lieut. Col. Frank WillIam La
Motte, '27C'E. of Columbia, recently
was awarded the Legion of Merit
for his periormnc(e as assistant
ehief of stuff of the 88th division
during the Fifth Army campaign
in Italy. Colonel LaMotte also wears
the Bronze Star. Mrs. LaMotte
(Dorothy Hangood), '38G, formerly of
Aynor, makes her home at 815
Woodland drive, Columbia.
Chaplain Claude McIntosh, '27A,
of Columbia. is now stationed with
the AAF on Saipan, where lhe has
built a chapel in a Quonset hut.

and Long Island, N. Y., before be
