ODK Will February Graduates, Other Men To Be ConsideredFor Admission In order that any mea in the NRO ' elass which will be graduated in February who have earned 100 honor points and any other person who has met this minimum requirement may be duly considered before the close of the semester, the Chi Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa national honorary leadership fraternity will hold an election of members on Tues day, Dec. 19. All men who have earned the necessary 100 honor points and are desirous of becoming a member are asked to turn in a list of their points to Norman West, president of Chi Circle, or to any of <he other members before Tuesday. Omicron Delta Kappa, or as it is popularly known "ODK", was founded on Dec. , 191.1 at Washington and Lee University and now has chapters or circles at 46 leading American colleges and universities. Chi Circle was founded at the University in 1028. Its purpose is to recognize men who have attained a high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities and to inspire others to strive for conspicuous attainments along similar lines and to bring together the most representative muen in all phases of collegiate life and thus to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questionis of local and inter-collegiate interest. Five indispensible qualifications for membership are character. scholarship and intelligence, service and leadership in campus activities, fellowship and consecration to democratic ideals. To become a menber of the Chi Circle, a prospective iember must have earned 1OU honor points from the list below and be voted in by the existing membership. Chi Circle is now composed of Norman West. "Wind-Star belongs to the now con aiderable constellation of beautiful books to the credit < f liostick and Thornley, Publishers, uf Cu' mbia, 11d iully upholds, both in contents and in iornat, the very high standards which this South Carolina firm has established in its ' arlier volumes. "Wind-Star" contain., verse of many type , most of which has previously appeared in snagazines and newspa per-. Some sixty-odd poems make up this lovely v-dume. and numbered among them are n.any which ate cer tain to appeal to the reader, no mat ter what his individual poetry prefer encw. The author's interests are catholie, her modes of expression va ried. Although this is her first published volumu of xerse, M iss Telfair's name has long been known to poetry lovers throughout the nation. The most striking aspect of "Wind Star'' is the genuine poetic feeling of the author, -which runs like a silver thread throughout all her verse. A sense of rhythm which is musical, but not slavishly so; a splendid feeling for mood, and imagery which is both striking ;md appropriate give distinc tion to nearly every page. Nancy Tel fair IHas l 'ersatilityv Nancy Telfair herself describes her poems a:4 "My chislings of linity Upon the granite rock of doom." But they are not all quite as px)r tentous as that sounds. Some of them are delightfully light, sparkling with genuine humor. G. Christopherson of the University English department was the guest speaker at the regular weekly meeting cf the Euphradian Literary society on Tuesday night. Prof. Chrie"opherson spoke on how the Society could stir among the male members of the student body more in terest in the activities of the Society. When the University was small, 300 or ;~ students. those students were on the defensive as consequently was the entire University. The school and its student body was subjected to a great deal of criticism from throughout the state and for the purpose of develop ing an impervious unity, the students met and argued u(: the issues before them, he said. Now that the Univer sity is on top of th, heap, so to speak, continued the -rofessor, students were inclined to overlook the defects in the University and the programs in the Literary societies become entertaining instead of constructive. prevail To store the light of the perpetual A proof of life when death and hate shall pass, A bright recorded oath upon the grass." Sophisticated and Ilonwispun Miss Telfair's art is at times so phisticated, at others homespun, as in "A Philosopher of Rural Origin," of whom she writes, .................................................h is toes Had ploughed too long and deep the cotton row's Ever to feel at home among the stars." At once whimsical and penetrating is "Professor Speaking to Women's Club," while in the section entitled "Seasons and Days" are several quite remarkable examples of imagery in nature. My purpose in !mentiniii;g and quotiJig snatches from these poems is to demonstrate how wide is the va riety of the verse which Miss Telfair has included in her book. "Wind-Star" is really quite remarkable in that re spect. My own favorites of the poems in "Wind-Star" are "Leaves of the Trees in Autumn," "Wisdom," and "When Love Is Gone." The last men tioned poem can speak so much more eloquently of Nancy Telfair's verse than 1, that I quote it in full: WHEN LOVE IS GONE "i am as a tield of grasn Over which the swift winds pass I am bowed. As an organ leit alone, Organist and songs long gone 1 am dumb. I anm as a goblet dried. WVine-stained crystal rim and side I am draiited. As the ashes dead and gray When the tire has burned away I anm cold." It seems incredible in thmi., period of wartime restrictions and shIortages, when niearly all publishers are produc ing books slightly on thme shoddy side, but hiostick and Thmornley have cona trived to produce in "Wind-Star" a v'ohnne of pre-war qjuality and dis tinction. maintaining their unuasual record of never having published a - hook which was other than beautiful. Their actions were also observed at about the same time by a saleswoman who made her w%ay over and volun Leered her services to the two of ficers. "No thank you". one said. ALCOVE In the central alcove of the Caro liniana Library at the University of South Carolina stand two marble busts of former famous South Caro linians. Gov. and \Irs. Francis \V. Pickens. Governor Pickens was the Ameri can minister to R:u,sia just before the Civil War. He married Lucy Ilol comb. a famous beauty from Texas, prior to leaving for Europe. It was said in Washington at the time that Lucy accepted his proposal on one condition, that he accept the Russian mission. While they were at the court in St. Petersburg. their only child was born and given the pet Russian name, "Douschka", meaning darling. Iler godparents were the Czar and Czarina. Governor and Mrs. Pickens, iii the fashion of the time, sat for portrait busts to a European sculptor whose work in white marble they brought back with them to Edge field. S. C. SPELLING Statistics show that the average college student is -deficient in his ability to spell. In order to correct this, the English department, here at the University is offering a course in spelling for the first three weeks in English II. The Englith. departnent has for a long time realized the necessity of emphasis being- placed on spelling, & grammar and punctuation. Dr. Babeock, head of the depart ient. auninnced. "A reasonable pro ficiency in spelling is one of the requisites of passing freshman English." Lahcock further stated that this most common spelling demons are diphtheria, indispensable, irresisti ble. liquefy and veterinarian.
