,Basketeers SPORTSCOPE By BUCK CURETON The scene of many hard fought struggles now lies quiet. Gone are the surging crowds, the waving banners, the screaming fans, the hustle and bustle that goes with game day. Yes, football season has come and gone. Down in the locker room only J. C. Hinn remains, putting away all the frightful concoctions for healing the wounded. Jerseys, pants. pads, shoes-they look as though they remember too. Yes, football season has come and gone. And it liasn't been such a bad one. Although most students, and faculty members, consider any Carolina football season un successful when we don't beat Clemson, this column is- prone to disagree. Don't misunderstand-I, too, think we should have beaten Clemson and by at least three touchdowns. However. there are several things to be considered in connection with that particular game. Furthermore. I am not going to mention them because they have been rehashed too many times, and you prob ably Wouldn't believe me anyway. But, as a whole the season hasn't been such a bad one as some people think. Look at the schedtule-Georgia Pre-flight, New berry, PC, Clemson. North Carolina, Charleston Coast Guard. Wake Forest, Miami University-only two fairly easy games. And if you don't believe Carolina had a football team take a look at the pictures of the Charleston Coast Guard Game and the .Wake Forest game-I think you'll change your mind. THE EMIPTY SPOT It is wit hi regret that I make the announcement that freshman fullback Mac Erwin has left. Carolina--Mac has withdrawn from the uni versity and mttade application for admission to Uncle Saum's navy. )u ring the season just passed. Mac showed more improvemnent than any man on the team. It will be remembered by many that at Greenville High School last year. he was not only All-State but All-Southern as Wei, which is no small feat in alny high school. And when next season opens I'm afraid there'll be a very empty spot in the Carolina backfield, where one Mac Erwin shoui he. Good uick. Mac. 'This column had hoped that restrictions would he lifted from the Big Ten league in order that Ohio would be able to meet all comers in the "big bowl." Such is not the case, however. and we therefore take this opportunity to say that Califorina will take the Volunteers by three touchdowns. Without delay a very secretive meeting was held behind locked doors. Every possible candidate was thoroughly discussed pro and con-much wrangling occurred. hair turned grey overnight--and the fol lowing are the results. ColErwian (U.stComplet RecrinkepartmFent) DIXE RADIO COMPANYO 1712 Main Street Phone 017 Work Civilian Sports Council To Meet Civilian Intra-Tenement Basketball Planned Civilian intramural sports council has started plans for an intra-tene ment basketball round-robin tourna ment for the purpose of making it possible for any civilian.on the campus to participate in the sport, whether they have had any past experience or not. This council is composed of Ken neth Dukes, Sehern Sellars, Loren Williams, Fitz Allison and Beezie H-ydrick. They arc to act as coaches and referees for the games and will not he eligible to play. No commercial league or varsity sports player is eligible to play for any of the tenements. The names of town boys desiring to participate will be drawn and they will be placed on the tenement teams. A meeting of the intra-mural sports council and one representative from each tenement will be held next Tues day at 5 o'clock, in the gymnasium. Latimer Selects Harrison All-State lames "Skimp" IHarrison, stellar University of South Carolini end for the past four football seasons, has been chosen by "Scoop" Latimer of the Greenville "News" for one of the flankposts on his All-Southern ag gregation. IlIarri:on, one of the few civilians on the Gamecock squI ad, was irnjured in the North Carolina game and did not participate in cither the Duke or Wake ForeNt contests. Skimp is a brilliant defensive ball player. and has been mentioned on previous All-Southern squads. Now any visitor to the Carolina field house can hear that same voice cutting through the atmolphere, only this time the words are slightly differeent, "set up",being the order of the day. Ilow to accomplish the seemingly miraculous change in a few short days was explained by Coach Mac today. "The boys have got to have a password, so that is it." Within these few short words are contained the man who will guide Carolina's hardwood destines for the next years. A man who means what lie snys. When asked about this year's editiin of the Gamecocks, -he replied. "\\e will have a fast, spirited team; probably not as good as last year's, but one that should give a good ac count of themselves. We intend to use a man to man defense with the emphasis placed on condition." As for the squad itself, coach would venture no opinions except to say that if they kept working as they are going now, they should click. There is a large number of boys out for the team, with no returning veterans, and only three with previous college ex perience. The squad is large, about thirty men at present. hut it is being cut daily, and will continue to be cut until there is a working squad of twenty men. The schedule is not completed at present. but it should he ready fot issuance within the next few days. Games are "on the fire" with all the state teams, Clemson, Citadel, PC, Newberry, Furman and Vofford; some local service teams, other Southern Conference teams of Duke, North Carolina, N. C. State, Wake Forest and Davidson; and two games with the Southeastern Conference. The teams being considered there are Georgia Tech. Georgia, and Mercer U'niversity. All in all the Bird rooters will have a pretty good assortment of games to choose froni. At present the squad is working on fundamentals of hall handling and condition. It is composed largely of naval trainees. but about five civilians are intermingled and are looking good in practice. There are no old boys back this year, everybody is new, coach and players alike, but with good backing and large vocal support this year's Gamecocks will live up to their pr d ecessors and will be a ball club that Carolina can be proud of.
