RIM 0 OF School Presented Bain's Portrait At Ceremony Bain Paid High Tribute By Columbia Attorney, And Former Student A portrait of Dr. Charles We'lcey -in, head oh the dcpartinent of an :icnt languages at the University of Solth Carttlina from 08"8 to 14)10, xras unveiled in special exercises in I he faculty room of the University Librarv yesterday afternoon. The portrait was painte<l by Charles Mason Crowson, Columbia artist. Douglas McKay, Columbia attor icy, and former student of Dr. lain's, presented the portrait to the Univer sity in behalf of alumni and friends )f the late professor. Dr. Leonard T. Baker, acting president, accepted it in tchal f of the University. Dr. Frances W. Bradlcy, of the college of arts and science, presided. lr. McKay paid high tribute to Dr. [Bain's scholarship, declaring that "he took his place with the great classical scholars of his time." Dr. Bain was one of the few Amer icans who have possessed the first band knowledge of Greek philosophy and literature which is generally as sociated with the great scholars of the renaissance. Mr. McKay said. He was also an understanding friend and :onnsellor of his students, who loved liim deeply. Dr. Haker, in his acceptance spccch, stressed the important influence -of 1)r. Bain in raising the academic tandarcls of the University. declaring hat he was responsible for a great,r tart of the instituitious d velopment luring the current century.
