First Ce 8 9 SPORTS SQUINTS By WAI4Y DIN$MOOR " Around. The Campus It began to look as tho we never would l ve a basketball team but the newspapers say, that the season begins next week so watch out! After one cf those juicy meals at Steward's lall the other evening we ambled over to the field house where it was rumeorecl that a basketball team was assemblii g. Lo ant behold it, was tritfe I Such stalwarts as Me. Millan, )aly, Waidrop, 13jorseth, Ary, Wa.l lace, Cattore, Leighton, Warren, Noble, Man ning, Baggott, Bernstein, and Samu were to be seen prancing around in fine style. - 9Suh a lightI aeriously, the team's progress surprised me. They play a fast and furious game. They're rough and tough even tho they are a bit rough' on the edges. Several individuals impressed us as showine; plenty of promise. Bob Baggott and T. S. Ary are both good rebounders and good shots. Ary is currently work in out at the pivot post while Baggott is at one of the forward slots. Phil Cantore, erstwhile coach of the squad is playing a steady game at the other forv ard spot. In Geoi ge Wallace and Jo.e Sam, the Birds hay a pair of sharp-shooting guards. Iteah Leighton is definity;ly the man to watch. Both lie and lIuss Bernstein are pressing for berths on the first squad. ILeighton prepped at U'rbana High in Urbana, Illinois. J. Man ning, who played fresliinui basketball at St. John Uiiiversity is one of the belet ball handlers on the team, one thing which the liBirds are not. too well versed at as yet. After seeing tlhem work out, I can say this; the tenin prob uk. won't be the best in the South but it certainly won't be the worst by far. More work could develope a very simooth ma chine out of this average t all club. S -A Coach At Last!! / One of the-nmajor difficulties that w ,. . ""ed thin jeai in getting the basketball seasonl rolling. was that of finding a coach to replace Lt. Rex Enright, who is now at (eorgia 're Flight. Finea"lly, steps forward one of the V-5 officers, in the + unlit, Lt. Harry "lop" Findlay who is known as the volunteer coach. lie is not payed for his ef forts and the time spent in this work is purely his donation. Lt. Finidlay ...played colliege- basketball at lhe t'niversity of Southern California. lie hits coached seven years of igh school ball. lie has taken the teaim over and s training them vigorousl., for the first. game against Camp Butner, N. C. We wish him tie best of luck in his work and hope that the team has a highly successful season.
