Edward Barnard Crawford, '41A, whose home is at Clemson -ollege, now bombardier of a Liber ator of the U. S. Army Fifth Air Force is credited with spotting a Japanese medium class cruiser on the night of November 26 while pa trolling the Bismark Sea and leav ing it in an exploding sheet of [lames, according to an Associated Press report. Crawford's heavy bomber sighted he ship just before midnight in the Kavieng area off New Ireland, the -eport stated. Crawford lined the twisting and :urning cruiser in his sights. The irst bomb made a direct hit as a errific exphsion and flash shattered he darkness. A second bomb which lit the ship's deck was followed by hree smaller explosions. Crawford's bomber made a large ircle in preparation for one last run, tates the report, but the Jap super tructure was a sheet of flames and he crew marked it off as one less :ruiser in Japan's Navy. Leo Mario Traynor, Jr., '40E, is now at Harvard University, taking advanced training in the Jap anese language. Sergeant Traynor was one of 128 men selected by Army officers re cently to study Japanese at Harvard. He was the only one of 11 study ing Japanese who made the list for highest honors in November, even outranking an American-born Japa nese, it has been reported.
