Force is credited with spotting a
Japanese medium class cruiser on
the night of November 26 while pa
trolling the Bismark Sea and leav
ing it in an exploding sheet of
[lames, according to an Associated
Press report.
Crawford's heavy bomber sighted
he ship just before midnight in the
Kavieng area off New Ireland, the
-eport stated.
Crawford lined the twisting and
:urning cruiser in his sights. The
irst bomb made a direct hit as a
errific exphsion and flash shattered
he darkness. A second bomb which
lit the ship's deck was followed by
hree smaller explosions.
Crawford's bomber made a large
ircle in preparation for one last run,
