SPORTS SQUINTS . ) BY WALLY DINSMOOR * About The Campus Our boys looked O. K. in the Newberry opener. They looked ragged at first but as the game wore on, they gradually got into the swing of things and did a fine job. To Pat Thrash. belongs a good share of the glory. The tall, deliberate end made an excellent target for Jack Jones' and John Gregory's l>asses. His block of a Newbush punt set up our third score after he had caught two touchdown passes ear lier. Both Jones and Gregory showed great promise in the backfield, ably backed hr Bill McMillian and J. F. Lindsay. Carey Cox played a brilliant game at his center position as did the capable Dom "Omar the tentnaker" Fusci. In fact all of the lads gave a good account of themselves. * ** * Floral Department - Orchids to Prof. Furman Cannon and associate coaches for their efforts in putting the Gamecocks into playing condition in three short weeks. To Dwight Holder and his able and loyal staff of cheerlead ers. Holder. Johnny Gill. Squeek Folk. Betty Brady and Betty Coit. (excuse me while I utter a low but deliberate whistle), did a fine job in keeping what little spirit there was going. To Bill Jones, Student Leader and a great one too! Between Bill and these cheerleaders. we will have some spirit here yet. To Chief Arthur Fourier. for the showing his Carolina Cor sairs made in their between-halves demonstration. The boys stepped out in grand style and made the student body proud of their work ... Congratulations all of you. * * * * The Duke Sez: Last week's percentage. 1000. WHEE !! Let's do it again. ILTNOIS-PERI)E : This tangle looks more like an Il lini homecoming. since Purdue inherited half of the '42 Illini squad in the big Navy shuffle. I'll take Purdue's star studded ball club over a young yet aggressive "Fightin' Illini." ARMY-COLGATE: The East's best game this week. The Cadets from West Point rolled over a strong Villano\a outfit last week and will keep rolling against Colgate. MISSO'RI-OHIO STA''E: A close for Missouri. IOWA--WISCONSIN: Tails, its Wisconsin. For an almost totally unprepared ball club our Gamecocks really handed Newberry a great defeat both in scoro and in the moral victory of U. S. C. No one man on the Gamecocks can yet be classified as a par. ticularly spectacular performer. The combination of Jones to Thrash and Harrison is a particular ponent one while Greg ory handled the runs with great facility. It looked a wee bit on New berry's side after their tally in the first quarter. But the day was saved by a pass to Thrash for a counter in the early stages and the same performance was re peated later. The game was -inched in the last quarter by Bill McMillan who made the third and last touchdown for U.S.C. There will he "one drawback to our team when it comes on to the field next Saturday afternoon-that is the absence of John Gregory and J. F. Lindsay. Coaches expect Jack Jones to re place Gregory at left half and Phil Cantore to take Lindsay's position at right half. Gregory and Lindsay are being trans ferred to another Navy station. Carolina will have to give an outstanding performance Sat urday in order to make a good showing against the 176th In fantry team. The Fort Benning 176th has a great number of former stars of colleges throughout the nation-and as a result will be hard to beat. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 at the University Stadium at the Fair Grounds. * Covering Carolina's Colleges Presbyterian College just barely won from Clemson in their game last Saturday. The final score was 13-12. Let's hope that the Game cocks can do as well and better when they meet Clemson on the 21st. Clemson has only one letterman back from last year but it seems not to impair their smoothness and power. The Tigers are relying on their youngsters to win for them against N. C. State on Saturday night. P. C. 's Blue Stockings will be all polished up to renew their aerial tactics when they meet Newberry on Saturday. It was passing that beat the Tigers and the Carver to Adams and Kaleel combination are showing up very well. * Predictions Of The Week As for the ,ther predictions-The 176th Ft. Benning teani will swamp the University of South Carolina Gamecocks by a a fair margin. This is due to the inexperience of the Gamecocks and the power 1beiimd the soldiers. North Carolina State will overpower Clemson. Presbyterian College will drop their game to Newberry. This will be another one of those clo-oe ones. Enough for football for the time. Let's turn to the world of baseball. It looks like the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees will play the world series this year. I see the victory of the Cards and the pennant going to St. Louis this year. * Hots Off Deportment: Our hats are off this week to Chief Arthur Fourier and Rut Osborne and the Carolina Corsairs for the drill teams demonstration be tween halves of the Newberry game. We of Carolina are really proud of the Corsairs and rightly so.
