LL-SIDE B y GORDON HILL, Jr. T=E SMnING GHOST This was just his first year. His star rose in the North Car< lina, affair and it shone brighter with each game. Then la Saturday's performance against Penn State topped 'em all. A a justifiable result, Stan Stasica was selected on the Associate Press's All-Southern-the REAL All-Southern. This was the same fellow who was honored by being named the "Sophomore of the Year" in the Southern Conference. Stan was awarded this by being classed as the conference "Soph of the Week" three times dur ing the season. Remember a little more and you'll recall that it was his 66-yard gallop in his first varsity game that finally beat North Carolina. He played that kind of ball all year. Even after the AP writers in the south had cast their ballot Stan proved to them that their selection of him was not wron by putting on a classy show against Penn State last Saturda: With "the prettiest run ever seen in Carolina Stadium," Sta whirled and slide-slipped 31 yards for a Carolina touchdowl About nine of the Penn Staters layed hands on him but nothin was stopping him on that run. That alone was worth the who] game. The sport scribe that wrote that "Stasica was just an other guy off the football field" knew what he was talklng about. And just to show you that "something new has been added at Carolina" and to prove that the Smiling Ghost (as Stan has been tabbed) has that un definable teamwork quality that goes to make an All Southern and an All-American as far as I'm concerned, the first thing he wanted to know when he heard of his All-Southern selection was: "Did Sos make it?" That's a great back for you! THESE ALL-STATES They laughed when the Hill-Side pioked seven Carolina me on The Gamecock's All-State, they didn't know how good Car( lina really was. Well out comes the All-State of the AP wit six Carolina men on it. Now what? Tigers occupy the other five births to round out a team wha would be a TEAM if they could ever play together. Carolin antl Clemson were divided equally in the backfield and in th line except for the center-of which there was no argument. The Gamecock's and the A.P's All-States strung along tc gether for nir.e positions-only disputing in a backfield spo and a guard post. What say now? For the second year, the students of the University will honor their team at a banquet. And brother, we've got plenty to honor them for. The feast will be held at the Columbia Hotel next Tuesday night at 6:30. This year, the up an.'. coming Carolina Booster Club has charge of this annual affair that Sol Blatt, Jr., president oi the student body last year, began.
