Car lina downed the Purple Hurricane 1 to 3, and the match with the :adets was called off. The schedule engagement with Clemson last 'uesday was also called off. Twenty-one games were sched led during the season, but only thirteen of the settos were played. Most of the games were called off )ecause of rain or other unfavorable :onditions, such as the iew Uii versity cut system. The top-notch opponents of the Gamecocks were the Univcr.ity of Florida an( 'resbvterian College. Against both of these highly ranked teams the Bird ball slappers came through with creditable perform ances. Against the University of Florida nunber two man Gordon McLaurin of the Carndina netters downedI his favored opponent in a close match. The highlight of the Presbyterian contest was the defeat of Kerdasha of the Tennis Tech team by Stan lev Brose in the number one slot for Carolina. The chief fault of the 1941 combi nation of the Bird tennisters was the lack of experience anl coaching. LeRoy Dennis, number 3 men of the Birds, di(d especially well in his first year of varsity Competition. Mims, at the number 1 spot come through in fine style for his varsity debut. C., found the Birds draw 1'. C. men in the first and second rounds. The tournament will end to day with the finals on dock for 2::30 t1his afternoon. Next year's prospects are better than they were during the season just completed. I leyward Belser will be back taking law, and faces another year of eligibility. Belser was the number one man for the Bird's during the 1940 season, and only dropped two iatches during the season. Stanley Brose, a rising senior, will be back for more competitior., after a successful season in the number one position of the 1941 team. Gordon McLaurin, Oscar Mims, Irvin Chaplin and Bert Hill round out the rest of the squad reporting for duty next season.
