'rD U L.L with 'BULL 0 * by LEONARD TURNBULL CAROLINA ATHLETICS RISE IN ALL FIELDS As I pad 'Bull out and put the finishi,ig touches on a career as sports editor of The Gamccock, I am concerned mostly with the rise of the Carolina forces in all athletics. Last year Head Coach Rex Enright made the statement: "Next year we , re going to beat Clemson in more than one of the various athletics. It nay not be in football, but we will take them in more thai one sport." Enright's statement did cojie true. Clemson had a clawing handful when they met the Gamecocks in foctball last fall, and barely eked out a victory. In basketball the reverse was true. Rising to the heights of the "teai from nowhere" the Bird quintet downed the Tigers twice in floor contests. These two wins by the Bird Cagers give then the honor of the "teai of the year" at Carolina. In other athletics the Tigers have gained revenge. In boxing the Clemson sluggers downed the Birds. Clemson cinder men crunched out a win over Carolina and, their swiimming team ducked the Birds in two engagements. The two tennis teams were unable to get together for duels. In the last and best liked of the spring sports on the menu, Clemson bested the Birds in a tight pitchers duel on the baseball diamond. The game was held in Tigerland, and the opposing stars on the mound were Joe Grugan against Clemson's all American Joe Blalock. Yes terday afternoon the Tigers returned the visit. The results of the game are elsewhere on this sports rag. HITLER SPOILS HOPE OF "NEXT YEAR" Just at the critical period when everybody is gaining confidence and looking with assurance to the long talked of "next year," what should happen other than a maniac scourging Europe, and making U. S. leaders sure that the only course left if to wipe him out? That is the situation facing Rex Enright at present. The only thing between losing around eight star performers on the gridiron and keeping them in the cool) of the Gamecocks is a physical examination. Can anyone see how a burly football player could bust a physical examination? Look at the long list of football aces Enright is moaning over at present: "Bobo" Carter, Joe Krivonak, Bill Applegate, Steve Nowak, Stan Stasica, Nat Burgess, Buford Clary, Lucius Hinson and Maurice Carter. All of the above have to report to local headquarters for a checking over by medicos', except Stasica, and he has a very low numu ber. Nothing cheery about that. RISING FRESHMEN REPLACEMENTS LOOKED FOR One thing Bull can see on the cheery side is the rising crew of fresh men and bohunk stars. 'Fhe sore sport of the 1940 football machine were the guard slots. Seven men are coming tip to fight for the empty spots caused by graduation and the draft. Cosmo Rose, Doyle Norman, Bruce l'lyler, Tom Abel, Ernie Bauer, Wilson Johnson and Reggie Wilson compose a bunch of bright prospects for the Enright regime. The Ganiecocks will have Jack Keenan, George MacDonald, Neil Allan and Ton Stevenson coming up to fill the tackle positions. Bruce Tate and Knute Delk are rising to give reserve strength to Louis Sossanmon at center. The backfield aspirants are the brightest of all. Stan Stasica, with tkie low draft number, and Jack Little will be at the half back positions. "Sheriff" Dunham, Francis Nevils and Tnom Mac Millan at quarter back, and Bill 'Milner and Bill Turner aiming for the fullback slot. This crew mingled with the veteran varsity pigskin chasers will brighten the outlook no little. Af"the end positions "Skimp" Harrison, Bill Neely from the freshmen ranks, and Gus Hempley and "Kank" Vukelich from the bohunk class report for duty on Melton Field next fall. COACH STERLING DUPREE ANSWERS CALL IN JUNE Coach Sterling Agnew DuPree leaves the Garnet and Black colors to serve under the greater colors of the Red, White and Blue of the United States. Coach DuPree holds a reserve officers commis sion in the army, and will report for active duties on June 1. While at the University DuPree has served as backfield coach of the varsity football artists, and has been the head man of the varsity track team. If you want to know just how much Coach DuPree will be missed then ask any of the athletes who were his pupils. Here's hoping that Hitler gets a quick stomping and DuPree returns to the University of S. C. FINAL 'BULL SHOOTING WITH "BULL" WITH "BULL" WVell, that jutst about endls up things for ''Bull" with "Bull.'' I haven't crusadled for anything in the athletic p'hase of Carolina because I think Enrighit is dloing a wondlerfutl job. I have expressed in print one thing that should be done before Enurighit calls his regime O.K. That is a training t able for all athliletes. Th bis would be a grand thing 1but it seems as far off as a dream at present. The football players have a training table at a bo arding house at p)resent, and seem wvell satisfied. The training table should e'xtend to all of thle participants in the major sports. With fleetinag minuttes passing before the deadline for this copy I wish to turn the rag over to my successor. Th'le B.oard of Il'ulications, as usual ha:s messed things iup, and I can't give his name as yet. Hie has a worb i t ew -paper experience behItinmd him gained by working for a daily pap)er. lIe is the guy who is going to hav'e the hotnor of being the sports editor oif Thcu (;amucck (luring the semester wh'len the Bird gridl men lick the TIigers. i.e. ETis is my~ first prediction made in print, and I don't think it will be wrong.
