In fact, we all but had the Statue of Liberty doing a hand stand * SCALPEL Adding to last week's list of co-ed's going down for the Medical Ball tonight, we have Elith Ford, Katie Beaty, Lucy Beck Jowitt, Janm Wylly, Mag Cain and Peggy Lollis. Edie and Carolina's own Pierre LaBorde will lead the Grand March ... in the rare (or not so rare) ranks will be Katie and Billy Bryan . . . Pierre is President of the Stu dent Body, and Billy is prexy of the Freshman morticians . . . The function will be at Hibernian Hall, along with all the other St. Cecilia ghosts . . . The dance begins at ten p. in., rain, moonshine, and Little Jack Little permitting. 0 PICNICKING ... The newly formed club of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, sometimes known as the "Rover Boys," have been asked back in a real nice way with a pretty please to our fair campus . .. . So in honor of their 'Founder's, they are having their annual banquet Saturday night at the Wade Hampton Hotel . . . And a love byrd in the form of Boris Karloff, told me that the favors were going to be the very best . . . Calling the Virginia reel, "squir rel in the tree," and other swing steps was Mrs. Catherine Epsy. Cider, pop-corn, dough-nuts, and peanuts were served to the dancers. Carolyn Tode and Connie Long en tertained with some hill-billy sing ing. Louisa Herrin, who was in charge of the party, was assisted by Willo dene Rion and Joyce Hctzel, co chairmen of the decoration and re freshment committee. Adelyn Lip scomb was in charge of the invita tions. Mrs. Petty Gives Party For- AKG Mrs. J. J. Petty, honorary mem ber of Alpha Kappa Gamma, enter tained the organization at an infor mal supper Wednesday evening. The supper was given at the Petty home on Fairview Drive, from 6:30 to 9 p. in. Over 25 students, alum nae, faculty, and honorary members were present. Alpha Kappa Gamma is the only national organization wvhich wvas started on the campus of the Uni versity of South Carolina. It is an honorary group, recognizing lead ers among the girls on the campus. Membership is limited to four per cent of the co-ed student b)ody. Twenty-eight girls belong to the local chapter. The entertainment was sponsored by the Block C Club. The team re turned Sunday from Raleigh, N. C., where they played in Southeastern Conference finals Saturday night. Music was furnished by a ampli fying system. During the evening punch and sandwiches were served. About 250 students attended the dance. Hedge Arrowsmith was chairman of the dance committee. Coach and Mrs. Rex Enright, coach and Mrs. Frank Johnson, and Prof. Hodge acted as chaperone for the evening. With all the chatter about wanting to be stylishly different (original is the word the advertisements use) just what fashions can you name that we didn't favor just as shamelessly as your roommate wore the jerkin you starved for last week? Starting with the top of your shelf, take note. Sailor hats are a good simple example. No use attempting to trace some of the fantastic phe nomena displayed in La Milleanie Shoppe-but it isn't too difficult to puz zle out the bird nest, tin pan, dunce cap or soup bowl influence. Just flip through the current Mademoiselle if you demand printed proof that we are like the neighbor using our lawnmower. Navy blue suits made as nearly like uniforms as possible, cowboy boots, jerkins, and belts, stars and stripes fluttering gaily on places besides a flag pole. We never even murmured, "May I borrow your bonnet, Sut," to the sul tans when we snatched their turbans. And when was "a thank you" sent to the peasants for their kerchiefs? Did the Swiss girls get a by-your leave when American co-eds en masse salleyed forth sprinkled with em broidered blossoms? Have you seen a note saying, "Thou hast our con sent?" Or did we just up and take Puritan headgear? Sure and begorry, 'tis the Irish lassies a wearin' of the Scotch plaid. They should feel as guilty as the sweet young innocents who snuck off with the convicts' stripes. The only fads I can't find origins for are the sloppy Joe and saddle shoes. I imagine the sloppy Joe came in when some popular co-ed was more interested in keeping her shape in new sweaters rather than keeping her new sweaters in shape. And as for saddle shoes, well, by the looks of the ones around here, Eve must have patched 'em together from an extra fig-leaf! However, one fashion source women have always had but just in recent years displayed is back out this season. It is "backsout". I mean, backs will again be shown to the extreme. Double celebra tion is in honor of Founders' Day and of the reinstatement. Before the annual banquet, there will be a drop-in in the Palmetto Room. Sally McCaw will sponsor for Jimmy Shecut, past president; Eli zabeth Smith, for Laurie Hicks, vice-president; Martha Monteith for Frank Lever, treasurer; and Mary Dana for Eustace Miller, secretary. Senior Tonight Junior class members are honor ing the seniors with the annual Junior-Senior ball, "The dance of the year," tonight in the gym with Buster Spann's melodies for the music. "We hope that every mem her of the senior class will attend," said Dan Hollis, president of the juniors. As an added feature for freshmen, sophomores, and law school stu dents only, there will be a Mystery Melody contest. The orchestra will play certain tunes for them to give the names. The prize will be a box of Whitman's candy. Sponsoring for Jimmy Galloway, president of the senior class, is Ade lyn Lipscomb; for Clarence Glover,. secretary and treasurer, is Sarah Faulkner; Nell Berry is historian of the class. Dan Hollis, will have Elizabeth Yates, of Converse, to sponsor for him. Other officers of the junior class are Frances Meeks, secretary treasurer, and Elinor Flinn, histor ian. There will be two grand marches. A special one for the seniors will be led by their class officers and dates and then a special one for the juniors will follow. There will also be a special no break for each class and then three regular ones. The gym will be at tractively decorated in green and white, the junior class colors.
