Hayes out of the presi dency for ten minutes recently. All of this took place in the classroom of Prof. R. L. Meri wether head of the history de partment, while he was lectur ing to his history 22 class. The election of 1876 was one of the most hotly contested ones in the history of the country, and it seems that even the teaching of this period is not without its perils. For Prof. Meriwether had been interrupted three times be fore the appearance of the ice cream sandwiches. Rutherford B. Hayes was rid ing into the White House with a Republican majority when the ice cream sandwiches stoppe4 the whole parade. Meriwether barked, "Nobody ordered ice cream sandwiches here, to my knowledge." Boy replied, "But is says Le gare 101, on the slip here." Which was true. But Meri wether used persuasion and the ice cream went back to the can teen. Hayes was then firmly es consed in the White House by his Republican constituency and the indominable spirit of Meri wether. Orderer of sandwiches can get same by application to canteen, or confession to Professor Meri wether. "SI SIN Marlene "Desry" Coulter Addresses Caroliniona Club At Annual Meeting Says Isolation Today Impossible, Germans Misuse History Texts Isolationism is "an oxcart in a streamlined age" and adherents to this doctrine have misused history in an effort to prove their point, Dr. E. M. Coulter, professor of history at the University of Georgia, de clared in an address to the Univer sity of South Carolina society at its annual meeting at the Hotel Wade Hampton last week. In his annual report, Doctor Meri wether, secretary of the society, an nounced that acquisitions of histor ical material in 1940 totaled 115,491 items, most of them gifts, some of them purchases. At the outset of his address Doc tor Coulter spoke of the many his torical ties that bind South Carolina to Georgia and declared that South Carolina had as much to do with the founding of Georgia as Oglethorpe did. Doctor Coulter examined a nuni ber of different conceptions of his tory and concluded that history is the record of the human past. He then pointed out a number of ways in which history is perverted to various uses. "Think of the sordid use the Ger man leaders have made of history today," Doctor Coulter continued. "They have burned the books that tell the truths they do not like, and by a selection and distortion of the facts of history, they have erected the German people into a super-race whose rights are commensurate only with their power to crush out their conquered vassals. What crimes have been committed in the name of history! The most dangerous use to which history can be put is the dictum that the past is a perfect rule for the future, the Georgia historian de clared. Isolation once was a fact when a month was required to cross the ocean with ships; it is impos sible today. Photograph FOR Every Purpose CHARLES OLD NEW ADDRESS 1711 Main Street II.I.
