Cinder Men Overpower Tiger Team The University of South Carolina cinder men unleashed their power -Saturday afternoon and edged out the Clemson track and field team, 70 to 61, in a dual meet on Melton Field. In the victory the Birdmen kept clean their slate in South Carolina com petition. They have lost but one meet during the season, that to the strong Duke outfit, Southern conference in door champions. Larry Craig eclipsed two state rec ords as he performed for the Birds. He put the shot 47 feet, seven inches and threw the discus 151 feet, 7 1-4 inches, to better the records held by Furman's big Bob King. The meet was interrupted by a heavy rain which began after the first two events had been run off. The wet track, however, failed to cut down the speed fn succeeding events, as near-record times were chalked up in several runs. The Carolina men captured nine of the 14 first blaces but the Tigers came in for most of the seconds to make the meet nip and tuck all the way. Craig, strong-arm field man, gar nere(l scoring honors for the Birds as he racked up three first places for 15 points. He shared honors with Banks McFadden, Clemson, who also cap tured three firsts. Ed. Kitchens, Clemson middle-dis tance demon, clipped off the grueling 440-yard dash in 51.3 seconds as the Tigers swept that event. Dobbins placed second and Parrot third. Kitch ens also gave the spectators a thrill when he turned loose a burst gf speed in the anchor lap of the mile relay. The summary: One-Mile Run: First, Calhoun (Clemson); second, W. J. Erskine Overwhelmed University of South Carolina's base ball nine continued its drive toward the state championship last Wednes day with an 18 to 5 victory over the Erskine college Seceders on Melton Field. Returning to the mound with only one day of rest after dropping an 11 inning decision to Presbyterian, Mon day, Capers McCravy, Gamecock hurler, limited the opposition to nine hits, and was never in serious trouble after the 'second frame when he al lowed three runs.. Brilliant fielding plays featured the game despite the heavy scoring. Stroud for Carolina, and McDonald and Phil lips, for Erskine, made several dif ficult catches. Stroud handled 12 chances at his hot corner post with out a miscue, and McDonald, playing that spot for Erskine, turned in two sparkling catches of long fouls. Williams, with four hits in six at tempts, including a triple, and Burns, with three for five, led the Gamecocks at bat.
