Campus Mourns "Uncle Fruit" All winter the familiar figure of Mr. Tinman has been missing from the campus, he did so much to beau tify in his twelve years as University gardener. When he celebrated his eightieth birthday last year he seemed hale and hearty, but the weaknesses of his age became apparent this fall, and he died Easter morning. Although he had been out little for some months, his interest in his work was as keen as ever. He was anxious about the pruning and watering of favorite plants, and on his last drive asked to go past the new botanical garden so that he could see how Mr. Coker's plants were progressing. He loved the campus and gave both in telligence and ungrudging hard work to improving its appearance. His gruffniess was reservedl for those who through carelessness or mischief seemed bent on dlefaicing his smooth lawns, healthy shrubberies, or the flower bedis whichi were his special p)ridec. Nicholas Tinnman was borni Febru ary 6, 1X57 in Tydreath, Cornwall, Englanid. i s father was a brick mason; the water-color sketch which hangs over the mnantlepiece in Mr. Tinnman's Columbia home is a view of the church on wvhich his father had done the tower masonry. Nicho las himself became a stone worker, coming to America when lhe was twven ty-five andl working first in Massa chusetts; then at the Winnsboro grain ite quarries here in South Carolina. While in Winnsboro, lie married MIiss Annie Eliza Jordan of D)arling ton. They had six childreni who suir vive him: Mrs. C. P. Chalk and( Miss I,ottie Tinnman of Columbia, Mrs. M. TI.
