Undefei Biddies A Citac Play On Melton Field Rattle Between Two Undefeated And Untied Elevens To Be Fought The Carolina Biddies will play host to the Citadel Bullpups on Melton Field today in a game which will decide the state championship. Both teams will en ter the game undefeated and untied. Coach Harold Mauney has developed a fighting eleven out of a bunch of high school stars. The Carolina Frosh have an imposing record for this sea . soh. They defeated Newberry 28-0; P. C. 7-6; Clemson 7-2; and Furman 21-0. The strength of the Biddies lies in their large number of versatile gridders. The squad is made up of nearly three full teams. A few backfield luminaries have shown up. Foremost among these are Ralph Dearth and Ed Clary. "Big" and "Lit" Durham, Bill Henson, Van Ed wards, and Jim Manly are crowding close on their heels. Carolina's line has withstood many on 1 slaughts. They have allowed their goal line to be crossed only once. Kiss, Dor flinger, Vorderburg, and. McCovic have helped mightily to keep it intact. The Bullpups have also made a good record. The3 have defeated Erskine 28-0; Wofford 18-0; P. C. 28-6; and Newberry 25-0. Their showing against P. C. and Newberry is. an indication of their power. Their main strength is concentrated in Andre Cabados, 190 pound center and Chet Smith, 185 pound halfback. Smith has developed into one of the best passers ever seen at the Citadel. His aerials have won most of their games. The News and Courier says this about him: "Mr. Chet Smith is' doing things. What a back he is! What a passer! He completed 11 out of 19 passes and those he did not complete were, with two exceptions, fine throws. Only two went wild." Besides excelling in forward passing, Smith is an expert punter. A. Norman, coach of the basket ball squad, announced yesterday that the Gamecock cagemen were showing im provement in their daily practices be ing held in the Field House. There is still a month remaining be fore the lid is torn off the 1935-36 sea son but Coach Norman has been carry ing the cagers through brisk scrimmages. Footwork, shooting, and guarding has improved and is expected to reach a stage of high efficiency by the time the first whistle is sounded. The poor showing of the team in the first practices was disappointing and caused their supporters to not hope for much of the current team. The vastly improved squad that has been going through their daily routine with pep and vigor, has given the fans new hope and Coach Norman announced that he is ex pecting a much better season than at first thought possible. The small squad will not approach the great record set by the teams of the past three years but their spirit and determination will make them feature greatly in the state race. --. ". s. The squad is working diligently every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon i the Gym. Irving (Gau cho) Orlikoff and W. Ney are show ing great promise. The team hopes to capture the Southern Conference Crown this year. This is different from the football con ference because some of the football conference haven't teams and some of the smaller Colleges have expert squads. The College of Charleston is the only other school in the state and is therefore considered our big rival for the state championship. There will be no freshman team this year because of the lack of interest by the freshmen. --a.. o. The Biddies have bccn practicing hard this week in preparation for the game. In their scrimmage against the Bohunks they displayed unusual form in blocking and tackling. They will enter the game in their full strength with no men on the injury list. The probable starting line-up for Carolina will be ends, Tatum and Powell; tackles, Dorflinger and Be thune; guards, McCovic and Vorder burg; center, Kiss; quarterback, Dearth; half ba&ks, Big Durham and Clary; full back, Jim Manly. Scoring on a pass, punt return and blocked kick, the Fur man team had great difficulty with the stubborn defense put up by the Birds who also scored in the last quarter on a series of long passes. The Furman "flea circus" which is also known as the "house of magic," did not open up during the fracas and it was left to the Gamecocks to offer the fireworks with their flying trapeze acts and daring passes. This victory leaves Clemson and o, Furman, the undisputed leaders of the li, state race and the state championship sc battle between these two teams will th take place on Turkey Day in Green- - ville. The magnificent stand of the Caro- J lina line on two different occasions, the fine line-smashing of Ed Stillwell, new recruit in the Carolina secondary, and the powerful and steady attack of the Purple team all furnished the fans with plenty of excitement. The fact that Furman did not score J a point on a concentrate drive and C the fact that Carolina made the only y9 touchdown converted over the Furman line by any team this season except Georgia should give the Birds plenty 9 to be proud of. w The running of Earnest Rohr for b< Furman and the accurate passing by to Wilburn Clary for the Birds were the in outstanding features in the offense field. . k The competition between Bob John- in son and Larry Craig, Carolina ends, and Bob King and Roy Stevens, Fur- h man flankmen, provided the fans with C a glimpse of four ace ends playing - their heads off for their team and a possible place of the All-state. Furman made 11 first downs com pared to 8 for the Birds. Carolina gained only 47 yards while the purple players were stepping over 168 stripes. The fine passing attack by the State University can be seen by the good average of completing 9 out of 13 passes for the total of 177 yards. Furman attempted 6 aerials and com pleted 2 of them for 34 yards. Carolina's usually fine punting at tack was disappointing, they averag ing only 30 yards on the boots. Fur man did somewhat better with an av erage of 35 yards, although their star punter, Roy Stevens, did not play but part of the game. The penalties were equal ,on all sides.* The weather was not suitable, the crowd was small, the game had little effect on the state race, and the Fur man team did not open their bag of tricks, but the ga'me was hard fought and the fans were given a real treat. Biddies Mash Furman Rats Durham Twins And Ed Clary Star In 21-0 Rout Of Little Wind Carolina's powerful Biddies contin ued their drive for the state champion ship by eliminating the undefeated Furman Freshman, 21 to 0, last Fri day at Greenville. The Durham twins, "Big" and "Lit," and Ed Clary led the Biddies' devasta ting attack, which produced touch downs in each of the first three quarters. The Biddies played an alert, heady game, taking advantage of every break. The boys displayed speed and a powerful drive. They tackled hard and the blocking was much improved. The whole team played an impreg nable defensive game with Frank Kiss and "Big" Durham, the standouts. ! AND TUESDAY Y TEMPLE in |I | ELY T OP" with -..Omrr.LE mmDSnu ayFo Lone Scorer MD 97lL441/eA. The above grouping of letters is not another government project to build larger and more comfortable dog houses but stands for Louisiana State University's School Spirit. Georgia was played in Athens the past week and 4,000 students and fans hired six special trains for the trip. The entire cadet corp, 2,500 strong, attended in a body. This is what is better known as school spirit. A In Saturday's game with Furman, one of the leading games of d the current season, only a few tnousand loyal fans crowded into the stands. It is true that weather conditions were not all that is could be desired but if the students had the love and respect for n their team and school like they should have, they would have filled one section of the stands to overflowing. Sitting in a continuous drizzling rain, 47,000 watched the crucial battle between North Carolina and Duke University. Carolina's Season n With six losses to their names and two victories, the 1935 Game k cocks are nearing the completion of their grid schedule. They have only two games left on their schedule and have a 50-50 chance of f winning both of these games. Two more victories would give the Birds a highly successful season with 6 losses and 4 wins. e With the lack of material, the smallness and lack of ex perience of most of the team, and the poor spirit shown by the student body this year, the team has, in our estima 1 tion had a fair season. We will repeat the motto that is growing louder each day from the lips of the Carolina supporters: "Just wait until next year." yanos O" I THANKSGIVING DAY--FRIDAY "BROADWAY DICK GONDOLIER" DIKPOWEZ.J,-JOAN BLONDUL.T
