Birds T L. S. I - Clary Makes 1 Lone Score f Birds Lose Early Lead w Mickal Stars For Tigers In Last Half; Birds Play Third Game In Ten Days Playing excellent football for the ^ first half, Carolina overtook Louisiana State's three point lead and held it 'til the intermission, but an aroused Tiger came out on the field to begin the third 11 quarter, and when it was all over the * Roosters had only 7 points to contrast Ul with 30 for I,. S. U. The Gamecocks fought hard to hold r< their lead but the strain of three games 111 in ten days left the men in no shape to cope with L. S. U.'s powerful offense, 01 awakened to its peak for the first time Ul this year. The Pelican Staters remembered A their fierce battle with Carolina last B year and showed their fear this year 15 by kicking a field goal on their first M scoring opportunity. Holding the C oval on the Bird 9 yard line and with N only two yards to go for a first and M ten, Mickal dropped back and booted F a goal. " Undaunted by these three points the Gamecocks came back in the second period to rush the Tigers off their feet tli and push over a touchdown and the le extra point. Some people say it is good, others that it is awful, and still others say nothing. .I'm beginning to believe that we don't really know what s meant by college spirit. As I Understand it, it is the feeling of good will that a student has toward his collegc, ind a desire to make his college the best by co-operation. The trouble with most of us is that tve are more than willing for our colege to be popular but we are too lazy to do a little work to make it so. Let's get busy, girls and see if we :an t improve this collegc spirit of t>urs. We can if we really want to. Are you going to be a poor sport or ire you going to help put U. S. C. pn lie map for its good college spirit? 1 he tennis season is here. Have you signed up in the gym for the fames? It's not too late! The college leeds your support. Can we have tenlis tournaments unless, there are girls who are willing to participate? You :lon't have to play the best game. If you are a good sport you can lose and ike it. Don't let a little failure get you down. If you fail, then try again. And if you win you deserve rightful praise 1 tJ. fl. o. front. The second quarter saw the Roosters roll up 8 first downs, all but two of their total for the game. But Louisiana got together during the half and came out on the field like a whirlwind. Only a few minutes had passed when Mickal slipped loose and ripped off <15 yards to the goal. Shortly afterward he went around end for 30 yards to Carolina's 20, and then added 12 more. Featheree added another touchdown on a spinner. Even this did not satisfy the greedy Tiger and in the same period Yates swept through for 35 yards and a touchdown to make the count 23-7. And in the final quarter it was Yates again who tore around end for the final score, putting L. S. U.'s total up to 30, the biggest opponent mark since the Georgia Tech game of 1930. Biddies Training For Furman Go An important game with the Little Wind only one week off finds the Biddies practicing hard but handicapped by the necessity for some of them to practice with the Varsity third stringers in scrimmages against the first team. Coach Norman has been stressing passing and punting above other things during the lapse of four weeks between games. > Furman's freshman have one of the most powerful teams ever assembled in this state and plan to make it hot for the biddies on the afternoon of November 17. The Little Wind has defeated several opponents decisively this season, among them the University of Georgia Bullpups by a margin of two touchdowns and a field goal. With the varsity battle scheduled for the next day the Furman rats will try to give their school a good start and they are favored to do just that, (So were the rats from P. C. and Clemson for that matter). Most of the Carolina freshmen have gained weight and will present a somewhat heavier line-up than previously. N. C. State Game At Melton Field The two remaining varsity football games to be played in Columbia will be divided between the fair ground bowl and Melton field, according to Dr. R. K. Foster, director of student activities. The North Carolina State game tomorrow will be played on Melton field. FY>r the Furman game, however, interest is already so high that it is certain that ft will be necessary to play it at the fair grounds. second place among Southern Conference high-scorers, and enabled him to hold his lead in the state. Wolf and Clary both played excellent games, both offensively and defensively. The Carolina line played inspired ball the first half but were unable to maintain the fast pace. Sports Chaff BY EDWARD CHAFFIN i Boxing Schedule Started as a minor sports at the Uni- . versity, boxing has increased in favor until now it is one of the biggest drawing cards of the entire sports program. Carolina has produced three Southern Conference individual champions, and ( has always made a good record in the conference tournament. , Boxing meets with well known teams invariably 1 draw a good crowd. 1 And yet year after year the boxing J schedule is limited to about three or four meets each season?two at home s and two ofF. It requires a great 1 amount of rigorous training to be a"ble r to go three rounds. There is small < incentive for a man to keep traihing i for several months only to fight four < fights. Then, too, this kind of sched- i ulc allows only one man to fight in each weight. f s Student interest certainly justifies a 1 more extensive schedule, and it seems > that the support given by the cash I customers would make it possible, f Although the schedule has not been I announced as yet, it is rumored that < several strong Southern Conference 1 teams will be met, giving the team a t chance to gain some recognition. > < Carolina Blessed With Ends Whatever can be said of the 1934 a edition of the Carolina football team, i it certainly can not be said that there r will be any lack of good ends. All ? five of the ends now playing: Tom t Craig, Henry Willard, John Epps, < I?red Craft, and John Rowland will be < eligible from last year. Coming up ? from the Biddies will be Johnson, ( whose playing against the Clcmson 1 Cubs, Coach Laval described as the best game of end he had ever seen c played on Melton field, and Overton, j Besides these, there is Dave Coble, t junior college star, who is ineligible to l compete this season. f f Earl Clary in Old Form It seems that Earl Clary was speak- ^ ing the truth when he told Buddy ( Morehead after the Clcmson game that ( he was going to play real football the s remainder of the season. In the last three games Clary has scored thirty ^ points, giving him a total of 42 points t for the season, and second place in the t Southern Conference scoring. Cox of t Duke University leads with 55 points. t Here's hoping Earl raises his total at t the expense of the Wolfpack tomorrow. ^ O. ?. o. , a against 5 tosses and 56 yards. L. S. U. held a good margin in yards from s rushing, 230 to G8. The count in first downs was 15 to 10 for Louisiana.
