I Caroli Face Certain 1 Defeat Today By Seceders Visitors Are Strong Carolina Team Shot To Pieces In Sensational Swap With Big Leaguers By Cole L. Blease With the entire first string line-up swapped for major leaguers in base ball's most sensational trade of the year, the Carolina varsity opens its league season here today against Erskine with very little chance for victory. During the past week the Carolina infield was sold to the Yankee for $1,000,000 while Carolina got from league players, Lou Gehrig, first base; I Jack Saltzgavcr, second base, Frank Grosctti, shortstop; and Lyn Lary, third. The Birds going to the Yankees were Jenkins, catcher; Blair, first base; Captain Vaughn, second; McDougall, short; and Hicks, third. The outfield was shipped to the Athletics, Yankees, and Giants, Richards was traded for Simmons of the Athletics, Harley for Babe Ruth of the Yankees, and Hambright for Ott of the Giants. Pitchers Ouzts and Wolf were sent to the Athletics. In return the Athletics sent pitchers Grove and Earnshaw and catcher Cochritic to the These trades greatly weaken the chances of the Birds to capture the championship of the league. But Coach Lilly Baval says that he hopes to give the other clubs a tough fight. It i: New Sport Is Invented Yack Rawford, Ymn Director, Originates "Balling"; Appeals To All By Cobra C. Blackwood Yack Rawford, Ymnf Director, has invented a new indoor sport equally adapted to women and men which he says will be quickly learned and will be universally played before exams. This is a game which lie playfully named "Balling." It is a sort of imitation of the old Apple-bobbing game played in the days gone by. It is a game requiring more science than muscle and seniors will know the game much better than freshmen. The game is composed of several balls, vari-colored which arc suspended from the ceiling. Each player jumps, and tries to "pull" the ball corresponding to the square in which lie stands. As example, a student might be standing in the square marked HISTORY and would try to jump for the ball marked correspondingly. If he succeeds in pulling down that ball, he moves to the next square. Each square has a value, usually 3, although some balls which arc bigger and harder to reach are marked 4 and some balls hanging lower are only rated as two. When the player readies 124, he is placed in a zoo with others who have completed the round, and if he is especially adept at pulling the balls he is placed in a separate cage marked, Phi Beta Kappa. The game continues until all who started have either finished or dropped out. IJ. H. This action came as a surprise to everyone as Coach Baval had just led to listless Birds to their first Southern . Conference football championship. It is understood tfiat the action was taken because the alumni hated to see Carolina have such a fine team, and that perhaps Muckfayden could create enough dissension in the Bird ranks to :atisc them to loose all their games next season. JOHNSONE ENTERS MINISTRY Joseph Johnsone, head goody-goody of Wardlaw Bible club, was ordained to the ministry last Sunday evening at 7 o'clock in services conducted by the Rt. Rev. William Donelan, President of the Block C club, chief ministerial and honorary religious organization on the campus. Mr. Johnsone is expected to report to Rev. Wm. Laval for training in Biblical expression, Didactical literature and forceful oratory before he enters his pulpit at Swansea, S. C. this summer. THE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Carolina's football chances do not seem so bright as spring practicc comes to a close. The Birds, in their opening game against Epworth Orphanage's second string, will face some of the toughest opposition they have had in years. However, Coach Baval is confident that the Birds will defeat the Orphans. Flo Shine, heavy center, said that he was afraid the dauntless Orphans would have too much school spirit to be beaten. Coach Baval is reputed to have scolded Shine for this spcecli, saying it would ruin the Birds' morale f it got to the squad. Well, the second game is even more difficult, the Gamecocks meeting the Columbia Bible Society on the Biblctecrs home ground.
