The Very Idea! By 13i11 Gaines Fraternities on the campus, it is said have depended almost entirely on the results of the intelligence test given to the freshman class for deter mining who will get a bid among the members of this unusually erudite ?s semblage. It is a great step forward; or it might be a magnificent gesture toward the clean's office. Who knows? It is invigorating, refreshing reani mating and what not to learn that wealth no longer quickens a decadent fraternity's pulse; that money is not the most sought after quality in a "pledge;" that a well-filled purse would not be considered above other merits. It is. indeed invigorating, re freshing, reanimating and what not. Also worth' of commendation is the fact that brains will not supercede the social graces, up to this time absolute ly essential to entering the brotherly circle. No longer will it he necessary that a "brother" be able to balance a teacon on one kne?. hold an unsatis facto-v h+t of a sandwich in one hand while fending off the vocif rations of a percnir;7w and adipose eHlll-rlv fe male with his other lunch hook: no longer will it he imperative that one of th^ fraters he able to 'xplain to the rhne-ones inst why th:a1 vmg ladv is zr +'ristrll" on h^r fnet -- w h1v lrother Snookus i- sinei1:; to the nrchcstra: no lonucr is it conpilco.-v that a "n ledrre" he able to d;.locate his vertebra in fourteen different knds of wavs on the dance floor before he ing adnitted to the full beneits of (irotherhood. Now that the idealistic state has come when money is not an object of prime importance to fraternnities and brains are preferred to flapper-hand lers, it is to he expected almost any day to be able to see Negroes getting justiee in the South and infants grow ing beards. No man can look masterful with a yelling baby in his arms. Red means danger. Red is being worn more and more by the well dressed woman. The toper should never believe all he sees, The modern girl no longer has to don a bathing suit to acquire sunburn. Her street costume is quite adequate "Always did dislike foreign entan rtelmAnts" said the doughboy as he f,lt in the (=erman barbed wire. Use F,lme Will T ,dhten Work For Teachers Experiments Show New Meth od To Be Superior To Present Methods It is very probable that the grade school teacher's load will soon be ligh tered by the use of films in teaching. The Eastman Kodak Company, acting with 'the National Educational Associa tion, has just completed an experiment that seems to demonstrate conclusively the superiority of the new method over the old. I,n geography a thirty-five pe' cent gain was registered by the pupils taught by means of films, and a fifteen per cent ga'n in general science. Ap proximately 5500 children weri taughi with films and 5500 more were taught the same material without the aid of mo tion pictures, in public schools scattered over twelve cities. A 500 word report has just been coni pleted by Dr. Ben. D. Wood of Coluni. bia ard Dr. Frank Freeman of the Uni versity of Chicago, directors of the ex. periment. "In this experiment," the report said, "we have studied the films not as a pan acea to be substituted for present instru mentalities of the schools, nor as a means to revolutior.ize the aims of edu cation, but as an addit'on to the present pedagogical devices of the school; which may help in the attainment of cerrrently accented gals." Co. S Francisco, Cal. Richmond, Va. Gentlemen: Since I first started to smoke, I have always smoked cigarettes. One day SHE said to me "Ed, dear why don't you smoke a pipe. I thinfk those long straight-stemmed pipes are so manly-looking." So, naturally, I had to buy a long stemmed pipe and a can of well, we'll call it "Blubs Mixture tobacco." Im mediately with a certain feeling of pride in my new pipe, I "lighted up", and proceeded to have my tongue bit ten. I tried almost every brand I had ever heard of, but none satisfied me. Sadly, I had to confess to HER that as a pipe smoker I was a good die titian. "Did you try Edgeworth?" she asked. "That is what dad smokes, and he's always smoked a pipe." So I was forced to try Edgeworth, and all that I can say is that if every fellow that has tried to accustom him self to a pipe, started with Edgeworth, there would he very few that would go back to cigarettes.
