CAMPUS ORGA] DR. MORSE ENTERTAINS CHANTIC'LEER MEMBERS J. E. HavWnw Read. and Inter. prets Selection From "Omar Khayyam" Chanticleers hold open session tonight when they entertain their guests at the home of Dr. Josiah Morse. The meeting will begin at eight o'qlock and end, if we can beleive reports, when every one has said his say. The members of the Chanticleer Club have been asked to bring a visitor to the meeting. A typical program and dis cussion will probably be given with a round-table discussion. Last Friday evening John Erskine Hankinm read a selection of the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam and spoke upon the philosophy of the tent-maker. More than the usual number ot the members disa greed upon the interpretation of the verse. In fact the discussion wax so warm that Dr. Morse saved the day by serving ,cooling beverage and cakes. So, with their minds at logger-heads but their appetites satisfied, the meeting ad journed. - U.s.c. - SCARABEANS INITIATE IWO NEW MEMBERS Decide to Hold Bi-Monthly Meet. ings at Home of Members Next at Mis" Fishurne's Two members, Margaret Aycock and Mary Cade, were initiated into the Sear abean club at its meeting Friday. Miss Peggy Lancaster was hostess to the or ganization. The regular business of the progra,n concerned a discussion of fees, initiations and time for the meetings. It was de cided to hold the bi-monthly sessions at the homes of the members. Miss Har riet Fishburne will enertain for the club next Friday at her home on Hagood Avenue. At the close of the business session, Miss Lancaster served her guests with ref reshments for the social hour. - U.s.c. - SUMTER COUNTY CLUB ELEC'S CUTI1NO HEAD At a meeting held Wednesday :>e tween the hours of two and three o'clock, students from Svmter Countv County met in chapel for the organ;. zation of a Gamecock County Club. The officers elected were: President. Charles Cu*in-o. Jr.: secretary aad treasurer, Boliver Bull; and publication manager. Jack Smith. The club decided to have a meeting every two weeks. the time and place to be designated by the president. A committee of three were appointed to draw up a constitution t. be presented at the next meeting. According to the report ot the secre tary, this club promises to be one of the largest oounty clubs on the camarts. - U.s.c. - EUPHROSYNEANS READ WORKS OF H. TIMROD Reviewing the American poets, :he E.uphrosynean meeting Wednesday dis cussed the verse of Henry Timrod. Mis5 Thelma Burges> related some oi the mn cidents in the life of the South Caro linian. The poem "Spring" was read by Claire Patterson; "Carolina" was sung by Margaret McCall. At the conclusion of this portion of the program, Virginia Wof ford of fered4 the witticisms for the afternoon. The2 meeting ended with devotional exercises lead by Mary Cade. - U.s.c. - NEW OFFICER ADDED BY JUNIOR CLASS Not that they are seeking publicity but because they want the student body to know that they are awake the jiunior class has added another officer to thc roster. Jimmy Hearon has been chosen reporter for the class and the duty as signed him of getting all the Junior activities into the Gamnecock. Catherine Phillips has been selected for class historian. Men Professors, Wives of Faculty, and Others Con nected with Uiversity PROMOTE CAROLINA WORK Aids at "Y" Banquets-Furnihes Chap erons for Dances--to Hold Meet ings at Homes of Members The Auxiliary of the University of South Carolina met Tuesday afternoon at four-thirty in the home of Mrs. E. M. Rucker. This organization is com posed of all women professors, pro fessors' wives and all women connect ed with the University in any official capacity. Mrs. Rucker threw the two big par lors of her beautiful home open to her guests. The rooms were decorated with autumn bowers. In a short busi ness meeting. Mrs. Rucker was elected president for the current year. Mrs. Melton was president last year, but she was not present at the meeting Tuesday. After the business meeting, there was an informal reception for the new members. Several new mem bers were added this year. Two new faculty members are women, there were several new faculty wives and one or two of the old members took up the bonds of matrimony during the sum mer. The purpose of the organization is to promote all the interests of the University and especially the girls. The faculty wives have been more than kind to help with all the Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. banquets. They have also furnished chaperons for all the University dances. It was decided to hold the meetings in the different homes this year in stead of in Melton Hall as was the custom last yeari Mrs. Rucker with several of the members assisting her served delicious ice cream and cake to the guests. There are now sixty-five members in this organization and they have proved themselves invaluable in all University acti4ities. - U.S.C. - DOROTHY DIX FAVORITE AUTHOR OF HYPATIAN So Admits One Member at Rol Call-Postpone Next Meet ing Two Weeks When called upon to give the name of her favorite author in response to the roll call at the Hypatian Literary Society Wednesday afternoon one girl hesitated a second and then answered, "Dorothy Dix." Well, at least we ad mire her frankness if not her literary taste because we suspect some others would have given similar answers if they had been as truthful. There will be no meeting of the Hy patian Society next Wednesday be cause of preparations for Fair Week and on the next Wednesday there will be a holiday for the Citadel game and Orangeburg Fair. The program for ihe next meeting will be announced later. - U.s.c. - RICHLAND COUNTY CLUB ORGANIZES Thue students of Richland county held a meeting Saturday and organized a Richland County Club. The following officers were elected: James Hicks. president: Miss Harriet Baker. vice president. and Miss Minnie Czarnitzki, secretary and treasurer. - U. s.C. - ATHENE CLUB VOTES FIVE NEW MEMBERS The Athene Club held a call meeting Monday afternoon. Miss Heyward, who has recently been voted an honorary member. was elected president. The followving girls were voted new mem bers: Lot ise Smith, Helen DuPre. Eli zabeth Phillips. Gladys Young. and Mar garet Lyon. Plans for initiating the new members were discussed. - U.s.c. - Everybody wants to know what has become of Sally. She's in the Jail House now. 4D BUSY WEEK DR. TAYLOR SPEAKS ON HINDUS' MEDICINE Memdbers of Pa"tbmur Club Hear Cohmnbia Phyaician-Organi zation Holds 2nd Meeting Dr. Julius Taylor,' practising physi cian of Columbia. spoke to the Pasteur Club Wednesday evening. The meeting was the second of the newly created or ganization; and was opened to all stud ents enrolled in pre-medical courses. In his talk on "The medicine of th, ancient Hirdus", Dr. Taylor reviewed the period from 1500 B. C. until the de struction of the Hindus culture by the Mohammedans. He brought out the un usual attainment in surgery, especially plastic surgery of these people. Their knowledge of drugs, he pointed out, was so extensive that modern medicine has not equalled it. "The Hindus," Dr Taylor said, "es tablished me-lical qlinics and placed health officers in the towns. Their physicians were men of high ideals and were held in reverence by all the people." Membershig in the Pastevr Club is limited to eighteen. The organization is only two weeks' old and was started with the aid of Dr Corrington. Meetings are held bi-montily in LeConte College. Discussion or the various phases oi bi ology is the purpose of the club. with the especial idea of increasing student interest in the field of medical science. - U.S.C. - RESOLUTIONS SENT TO MISS ALEXANDER WHEREAS. the Stuadent Body of the University of South Carolina has learned with deepest regret of the recent bereavement of Miss Osra Alexander, 18 Norwood Avenue, Greenville, S. C. THEREFORE. be it resolved that the Student Body of the University of South Carolina extend to Miss Alex ander, one of its members. its heart- felt grief for the recent death of her father, and its sincere sympathy in her bereave ment.
